It’s some kind of magic – a review of the comic book “Injustice. Gods among us. Year Three” vol. 3

Years pass and Superman and Batman continue to be at each other’s throats. And it would be enough to sit down with a beer and talk … However, then there would be no third volume of the Injustice comic book .

I like that Tom Taylor uses the Injustice universe to introduce the reader to different corners of the DC universe. Year One was standard in that respect, as it was simply focused on rival teams, which brought to mind a typical crossover . On the one hand, Superman implementing the new order, and on the other, Batman, who saw totalitarian tendencies in these actions. In Year Two , the action literally took on a cosmic dimension, as the Yellow and Green Lantern corps joined the game.

The third volume focuses on the arcana of magic. I must admit that the magical side of DC is almost completely unknown to me. To this day, I have a slight geeky hiccup that I haven’t read the adventures of John Constatnine yet, who is the most important of the new characters here. In turn, I know Zatanna and Doctor Fate more from the Injustice gamesthan in the comics they appear in. Although, I can still say more about them than about a fairly large number of other new heroes, such as the childish-looking necromancer Klarion, or the talking … chimpanzee in a Sherlock Holmes cap, not inferior to Batman in detective skills. Readers like me may feel a little confused, but Tom Taylor is like that – he clearly enjoys taking full advantage of the DC universe, and in large part it imparts to the reader.

The screenwriter still manages to lead both of the feuding sides perfectly. Of course, the side of Superman is the “bad guys”, which does not mean that Gacek and his crew act in a moral way. For example: is it appropriate for heroes to kidnap opponents? Put them in a perpetual coma? It’s hard to cheer for anyone in this world. The character of John Constantine adds spice here, for whom the end almost constantly justifies the means.

Injustice works great as Elseworld. Tom Taylor can eliminate heroes in this way and it is an important element of the plot, because there is no fear that a few dozen issues later someone will come back to life. On the contrary – death is death here, which makes the comic closer to Robert Kirkman’s Invincible than to a typical DC title. With a small exception – in Year Three there is an unexpected return to the world of the living, but really well justified.

The screenwriter mixes various elements of the universe, thanks to which he still manages to surprise the reader and provide fresh ideas. In this respect, I liked the third book more than the second (but still the beginning of the series was by far the best in my opinion).

Graphically it is … bad. Admittedly, not in all notebooks, because in theory everything is in place: the anatomy of the characters, the composition of the frames, coloring – these are the lower average states, i.e. stereotypical superheroism. Again, a whole kaleidoscope of creators and anti-talent of some cartoonists worked on Injustice . Some faces look as if someone commissioned them from caricaturists who hang out on the seaside promenades. The quality of some of the drawings will come back to me in nightmares.

The third volume of Injustice once again provided me with decent entertainment. I wonder what motives Taylor will use next time. At the same time, I already feel a certain fatigue of the material. The strength of “Elseworlds” has always been their episodic character, and in this case the reader gets dozens of issues. And the thing is that superheroes are pouring down their faces, there are some reshuffles, someone dies – but the status quo is maintained all the time and I know that it will not change.
