We forge weapons! – a review of the comic book “The World of Akwilon. Dwarves. Redwin of the Brotherhood of the Forge”, Vol. 1

The world of Aquilon , created by Nicolas Jarry, is inhabited by many diverse races. Do we need another fantasy universe with such typical nations as elves, dwarves and orcs?

In pursuit of the title of Rune Lord

Dwarves are most often associated with blacksmithing, drunkenness and bravery. Nicolas Jarry does not intend to introduce a revolution in stereotypical thinking about this breed. Also in the world of Aquilon, dwarves make weapons, they are very willing to take part in battles, and they reach for stronger liquors. The only innovation is the reason behind their exaggerated tendency to violence. It is worth emphasizing that dwarves are as willing to fight with each other as with enemy armies. What’s more, the way to settle a dispute is a duel of two feuding parties. That’s what the title character wants. Become a Rune Lord and settle disputes with the Cleaver.

The best warriors, however, are also outstanding blacksmiths, because they craft their own weapons, which they mark with powerful runes. In pursuit of an ambitious dream, Redwin must train in the art of blacksmithing and learn new fighting techniques. At the same time, he has to abandon his family, and the creators put a lot of emphasis on this aspect. The relationship between the protagonist and his father is touching at times. Redwin has sacrificed much in pursuit of his dream, perhaps too much. It’s easy for us to understand his feelings because the whole story is told from his point of view. He ponders his life just before the decisive clash. And although the story is not overly original, Redwin eventually, like many before him, turns from zero to a hero, it still turned out to be a very tasty combination.

The hidden beauty of Aquilon

The graphics are decent. The fights are bloody and brutal, the dwarves have wonderful giant potato-like noses. In general, no scene is deeply etched in my memory, but at the same time I have no objections to Pierre-Denis GouxGoux’s line. Comics from the World of Akwilon , Egmont decided to publish them in paperback with wings for the cover price of thirty-five zlotys . Interestingly, it looks like at least initially each volume will be one closed story! In my opinion, for this price, it’s worth checking out the World of Akwilon. Even if you don’t get used to this universe, you will read one coherent story about the life of an outstanding warrior. However, after meeting Redwin, I want more. I will gladly dive into the world of Akwilon from time to time for these three tenners to learn about the stories of other extraordinary characters.

Is it worth starting an adventure with this universe?

I love the fantasy genre, and The World of Aquilon turns out to be its perfect comic counterpart. I was immersed in this universe from the very first page. Dwarves are my second favorite race, so I was more than happy to follow Redwin. I did not expect that I would like this position so much, and although I did not like elves , I have a great desire to reach for comics from this line as well. Orcs and goblins will soon appear . I can’t wait for this story! I recommend everyone to check out this epic series.
