Woman and the Huns – review of the comic “Disney Mulan: The Story of the Movie in Comics”

First of all, I would like to point out that this is not the first time I have come across this comic book. Almost 25 years ago it was also published by Egmont as a supplement to the magazine “Donald Duck” No. 47/1998. Of course, that edition was an addition in itself, so the quality of the publication was not very high and the colors themselves did not seem close to the aesthetic quality of the animation. Several years later, the De Agostini publishing house re-released the comic, this time as part of the “Disney Comic” series . The volume about the adventures of Mulan gets a hardcover and a fresh look. Another twelve years ahead Egmonthe resumes the comic book again, this time in a soft cover on slippery paper, with a refreshed graphic design that enjoys the eye with its brightness taken straight from the animation. For a slightly exclusive comic book release for kids, that’s a really good job. It is also worth remembering that Mulan was released on the occasion of the premiere of the live action movie about the adventures of the Chinese warrior . A picture story , which was also based on a Disney animated film from the late 90s. Well, it was not a comic book adaptation, but rather a novel with pictures and in some places speech bubbles with characters’ dialogues.

What is this comic about?

The story is based on the story of the legendary warrior Hua Mulan. The Huns invaded China, requiring one man from each family to serve in the imperial army. Mulan, a strong-willed teenager, volunteers to fight among the soldiers instead of her father. Since women are forbidden from joining the army, the girl risks death and the disgrace she can bring on her family. With the help of the general’s son, the saucy guardian dragon and the happy cricket, Mulan realizes her desire to bring honor to her country, family and herself – she is a truly liberated girl! With cleverness, strength and determination, Mulan fearlessly enters the battlefield and goes head to head with the other soldiers to defeat the Huns! This comic book can be a great inspiration for many younger readers, making Mulan a role model,

Disney’s good move

It’s hard to add something more about the comic, which is based on the story known from the 1998 animation. The presence of the drawing medium in comics and film gives us a certain déjà vu. Nevertheless, the style resembles animation, although these are not one-to-one frames. Unfortunately, we will not hear the songs either, and the scenes with their participation have been briefly treated. However, it should be remembered that thanks to the publishing house Dark Horse Comics and the cooperation of Disney, a family comic has been created, which will allow both younger and older ones to enjoy the animation panels, but at a pace that they themselves can choose. “, Better let him reach for the DVD or wait for Disney +, where the movie is available, because the comic will not provide him with one hundred percent the same experience as the movie.
