The hard life of fugitives – review of the comic book “Saga” vol. 4

Defection is associated with many problems – including the need to hide. Alana, Marko and their little daughter are no exception. They must somehow find their place in the world and at the same time keep their identity a secret. Nothing is simple though.

Living in hiding

It would seem that hiding somewhere in the maze of planets and moons should not be difficult. However, the matter is more complicated. A pair composed of representatives of two fighting races would be a big surprise to all inhabitants, and thus news about them could quickly reach the wrong hands. Therefore, they must make sure that it is impossible to recognize them – it would be best to hide somewhere and not poke their nose. However, they have to earn a living somehow. The profession chosen by Alana is quite surprising because it is seen by masses of viewers. However, the outfit she wears makes her difficult to identify.

Marko takes care of his daughter, but he has a hard time staying at home all the time – so he takes the baby for walks. Although it is masked, it is quite easy to recognize. The child, however, has his rights and is entitled to relaxation and contact with peers. Moreover, for an adult, confinement within four walls may be difficult in the long run.

Heavy topics

The creators of the series do not avoid difficult topics from the very beginning . Violence is visible in the Saga almost everywhere. It is sometimes presented in a very literal and visual way. This alone makes the comic book unsuitable for children. Other difficult themes appear in the fourth installment of the series. In the case of complicated relationships in a relationship, it’s hard to say that they are not suitable for minors (although some interactions between the main characters definitely delete this item for this age group). Drugs also appear in the comic, and definitely not as a warning.

Although the issues discussed are quite difficult in places, the authors do not introduce many interesting considerations in this volume. Simply, certain events take place and the heroes are confronted with them. However, it cannot be ruled out that in the following chapters these topics will be better exposed and analyzed in an interesting way. For now, however, they are “only” the driving force for the plot or its variety.

Contrasts

There are some contrasts in Saga . One of them is undoubtedly sometimes a fairy-tale line confronted with a heavy subject. Another clearly visible disconnect is the juxtaposition of the humor and the overall difficult mood of the piece. My favorite part of the fourth volume is perhaps the appearance of a shepherd who looks extremely sweet and wields a huge ax.

Unfortunately, this installment of the comic lacks a bit of freshness at the beginning of the series. The cycle is still interesting and enjoyable to read. It is also still beautifully drawn. However, the whole thing is not as impressive as the first part.

Nasza ocena: 8.2/10

The fourth volume of the Saga is a really decent book that can please the reader. While it's not as good as the opening chapters, it's still worth your time.
