The Elder Scrolls 6 has reached a huge development milestone. It is one of the most anticipated games of all time, right next to the next part of the GTA series .
The legend of the RPG genre and Bethesda’s priorities
Both games came out two years apart and helped define an entire modern generation. Both games have also been re-released multiple times and have had ridiculously long lifespans during which players still return to them en masse. It’s really impressive, but players are ready for what comes next. Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls 6 in 2018, and there have been hardly any updates since then, which director Todd Howard may regret a bit . Part of the reason is that Bethesda is largely a studio that works on one game at a time and has been knee-deep in the Starfield project for some time now.
However, Starfield itself will be released to the public later this week, and while efforts will continue to be made to update the game, release the announced expansion, etc., the team is already focused on the next project. Bethesda Softworks head of publishing Pete Hines spoke to Vandal (via ResetEra ) about the studio’s future and was asked when we might hear more about The Elder Scrolls 6 and if it’s still in pre-production. Hines was very clear and stated that The Elder Scrolls 6 has moved out of pre-production, which is the earliest stage of the game’s development beyond the concept phase. It is currently in full development, but noted carefully that it is “early” development. As for when we might hear more about it, well… it’ll probably be a while.
All of our studios have been focused on making Starfield the best it can be, and yes, we’re working on The Elder Scrolls VI , but the studio’s primary focus has been on releasing Starfield . So no, you won’t hear anything more about The Elder Scrolls VI . For now, we’re focused on Starfield , and that will be our priority for a while before we talk further about anything else.

When can we expect the latest installment of the series?
The Elder Scrolls 6 currently has no release date. Given that the game has only just entered full development, it may take some time. From start to finish, Starfield took about ten years of work, but it’s worth noting that the pandemic played a significant role here. Xbox gave the studio much more time to work on it after its acquisition, and it was a brand new IP. The Elder Scrolls is something Bethesda knows better and may be able to release a finished product much earlier than Starfield . Xbox boss Phil Spencer said he believes the game will be out in at least five years , meaning The Elder Scrolls 6 could be released in 2028 at the earliest.
It seems likely that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be an Xbox exclusive, given Starfield himself . Phil Spencer would not make a specific statement on this because it is too far away. However, the head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty himself stated to Xbox CFO Tim Stuart that all Bethesda games will be exclusive to the Xbox platform in the future .
