BioWare will hand over further development of Star Wars: The Old Republic to the new studio. After many years of work on the game, the creators of KOTOR will end this stage and hand over the reins to someone else. This decision is intended to give the game the best chance for further development.
Today, BioWare announced that it is handing over the further development of Star Wars: The Old Republic to a new studio. Since its launch in 2011, BioWare has been the sole developer of SWTOR and has been constantly rolling out new content and updates to keep the MMO alive. Now, after many years of developing and maintaining the game, the developer has announced that it is ending its adventure with Star Wars: The Old Republic and passing the baton to the developer Broadsword.
In a recent article on the official BioWare website , Gary McKay, the studio’s CEO, explained that he believes The Old Republic has the best chance of further development if handed over to a new developer. As a result, Broadsword will assume responsibility for continuing development on the MMO set in the Star Wars universe . Broadsword previously worked on other MMO titles, including Ultima Online and the Dark Age of Camelot .
I worked closely with Keith Kanneg, who leads the SWTOR team , to give the game and the team the best chance to grow and evolve. Therefore, while EA will continue to be the publisher of SWTOR , development of the game will move to our partner and friends at Broadsword, a studio specializing in managing online games. However, in the long term, we believe this is the best decision for the game and its community. At BioWare, we will miss being part of SWTOR history in the future. However, we also know that the game will be in very good hands.
McKay said.
McKay also made it clear that the change of developer will not be felt from the perspective of Star Wars: The Old Republic players . EA will continue as the project’s publisher, and some individual developers who previously worked on The Old Republic will have the opportunity to join the Broadsword team. Even though this marks the end of BioWare (fathers of the legendary Star Wars RPG Knights of The Old Republic ) as the main developer of SWTOR , the game will most likely remain in good hands and this change will not have negative effects.
