Ron Perlman is returning to complete the Hellboy trilogy

Hellboy star Ron Perlman says he’s ready to return and reprise his role as Hellboy and complete Guillermo Del Toro’s trilogy!

Hellboy star  Ron Perlman is, in his own words, an act where red face paint and horns must be reapplied to complete the Hellboy film trilogy . Perlman was the actor who portrayed the horned devil in the film directed by Guillermo Del Toro (2004) and its sequel, Hellboy: The Golden Army (2009), both released by Universal Studios. He quit the role after both films failed to gross even $200 million at the global box office. The Hellboy series stalled for a decade before Lionsgate took over and filmed their vision of Hellboy ( 2019) directed by Neil Marshall and starring David Harbor (Stranger Things).

Many lives, but only one true…

At this point, no one would have guessed that Ron Perlman would want to return to the Hellboy series – but that’s exactly what the Sons of Anarchy star promised when promoting the movie How I Got There abroad , in which he plays the role of a mercenary/arms dealer:

If we were to make a third film in the trilogy, I’d love to do it. It was supposed to be three movies, so I would go back and do it if we could finish the trilogy. But that’s just a matter of specific circumstances.
Perlman said on the Geek House Show

Ron Perlman has been quite relentless in  his efforts to make Hellboy 3 – especially as he is now running out of time to do so:

Am I looking forward to Hellboy 3 ? No, I’m fucking 71. We owe it to the fans. And we should give it to them because it would be an epic ending. So Guillermo, if you’re reading this, I’m not done urging you to finish the fucking trilogy.

A fragile hope for a revival of the original

The chances of  a Hellboy 3 being directed by Guillermo Del Toro are almost nil at the moment. Another hellboy film, Hellboy: The Crooked Man , is in the works, a more horror take on the character, which  wrapped filming early  this summer under the direction of  Crank director Brian Taylor (half of Taylor and Neveldine’s directing duo). Jack Kesy (Black Tom in  Deadpool 2)  will play Hellboy , and when  ComicBook.com spoke to Perlman  at the premiere of  Transformers: Rise of the Beast (in which he voices Optimus Prim), the actor has apparently come to terms with the idea that the Hellboy serieswill develop without it:

What happens to the character and the franchise on the periphery of it all is none of my business. I’d rather just feel like I was still playing his role for one of the great directors.

Perlman said.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man will be released in cinemas  on May 30, 2024 .
