A film about a car that has likes and dislikes (and these don’t live long) was a huge commercial success and grossed over $ 20 million.
The concept was written by the brilliant Stephen King, but there are some differences between the book and the script. For example, in King’s novel, the car was possessed by the evil spirit of its previous owner, Roland D. LeBay, while the cinematic version of the story shows that the car’s evil spirit manifested itself on the day it was built.
Already at the Plymouth factory, Fury crushes the arm of one of the employees and the other dies inside it. More than twenty years later, the dilapidated car finds its way into the hands of a shy teenager – Arnold “Arnie” Cunningham. I buy them from the brother of the former owner – George LeBay. The car already has a name – Christine. The new owner wants to renovate them, so he spends a lot of time in the garage. As the days go by, his character changes, he becomes paranoid and arrogant. It turns out that Roland and his family committed suicide in this car.
The film featured Keith Gordon as Arnie Cunningham, John Stockwell as Dennis Guilder, Alexandra Paul as Leigh Cabot, Robert Prosky as Will Darnell, Harry Dean Stanton as detective Rudy Junkins. Directed by John Carpenter.
Filming began in April 1983, days after the publication of King’s novel. Apparently Alexandra’s twin, Caroline Paul, appeared on the set, which the sisters did not mention to Carpenter until one of the scenes was taken. Caroline recalled:
My professional clutch pushing made it into the movie.
John Carpenter searched for car models all over the state. He bought twenty-four damaged pieces, thanks to which he built seventeen movie cars.
Christine destroys anyone who gets too close to Arnie, and kills his pursuers. In addition, it has the magical power to return to the factory condition, regardless of the circumstances. How does this demonic story end? Of course, everyone knows. Which does not kill (nomen omen) the pleasure of seeing this work again, for example to celebrate today’s anniversary.
