In urban fantasy literature , I always appreciate a large dose of humor, which is definitely not lacking in Milena Wójtowicz's novel.
Sabina, Piotr and Żaneta
A new employee, Żaneta, joins the PS Business Consulting company, run by two non-normative people met in the previous volume. While practicing there, she could not imagine that she would meet two inhuman mentors. One of them is Sabina, who is both a health and safety specialist and a striga, who can only be prevented by huge amounts of sweets from eating a new employee. The second is Piotr, a psychologist and incubator in one, still trying to accept his true nature, while protecting the people closest to him. As a new addition to the company, Żaneta has to reconcile work in which she feels that her life is at risk with her studies and the fact of being a non-normative person. As a boletus grandfather, she is in perfect contact with nature, but still has a lot to learn to be able to use her powers to the full. As if that was not enough, she is followed by an old woman, and soon she is also kidnapped. In addition, something bad is starting to happen in the city.
Lots of humor
Vice versa is the second installment in a series on non-normative individuals that was initiated by Post Scriptum. I read the first volume in one breath, the same thing happened in the case of the reviewed book. In addition to fantasy elements, we get a small criminal plot and a lot of motifs associated with novels. Although these customs, as befits our non-normative heroes, are quite non-standard. The author uses a light style, and the presented – often bizarre – events make it hard to break away from reading. This is what entertainment literature is all about, thanks to which we are able to switch ourselves off to the hardships of everyday life, even for a few moments. The greatest asset of the book, in my opinion, is the ubiquitous and often absurd sense of humor that makes you absorb it at once. The cover should bear a warning about the uncontrolled outbursts of laughter that it may provoke. Some of the situations described by the author have probably already burned out in my mind for good and will never leave it. The image of druids collecting mistletoe from trees in accordance with health and safety rules or a werewolf biting a toy from a pet store is only a small part of them. Funny situations are slightly spiced up with black, which I can also count as a plus. The return of the old heroes also provides us with a multitude of health and safety regulations from Sabina’s side and psychology performed by Piotr. They both try to use their knowledge for their own peace of mind. Once again, one of the most important elements of the novel becomes the relationship between the main characters who are ready to make many sacrifices to protect each other. During the reading there will be no shortage of secrets, Slavic myths and interesting situations in which the heroes become entangled. Summary
Vice versa Milena Wójtowicz is a great continuation of the series about the adventures of non-normative individuals. Fantasy, combined with moral threads and a whole lot of humor, make it hard to find something similar and equally thrilling on the Polish market. The book provides intelligent entertainment which is a perfect detachment from the surrounding reality. The ending suggests that there will be another part, and I hope it happens as soon as possible. I am in love with the main characters and now I would like to know their fate.
