Box and application
In a small box there are 96 item cards and instructions. There aren’t many elements, so it’s easy to organize them. Importantly, before we start the game, we must sort the cards according to the publishers’ suggestions. To do this, we need to take the entire deck from the large compartment, separate it according to the place icons, and place the Forest, Junkyard, and Museum decks separately in a box. We don’t use these decks until we are asked to do so in the app. In the large compartment, we keep the Grandfather’s Attic deck – the initiating game.
As you have already guessed, the necessary element of the game is the free application ( Yummy Yummy Monster Tummy ), which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play (requires Android version 5 or newer or iOS version 11.0 or newer). Before starting the struggle, you should install the application on your phone or tablet. You do not need to read the rules of the game in the manual, because the tutorial available in the application will allow you to get acquainted with the applicable rules. In the settings, we can choose from several languages: English, German, French and Polish.
Yummy Yummy Monster Tummy
We have two game modes to choose from: story (12 levels, during which we learn the story and unlock new places with item cards) and party (we play a single game using all the items unlocked so far). At the beginning, I recommend a story struggle that will allow you to get acquainted with the mechanics of the game. The main goal for 2-4 players is to feed multi-colored creatures (section “Types of creatures” in the app, these are: monsters, as well as rabbits that feed on vitamins), and we do this by mixing tasty colors.
A hungry man who appears on the screen of a smartphone or tablet opens his mouth and this is the moment – we choose one item card from our hand and use the device to scan the QR code on its back. Its color, however, cannot be accidental – the color of the cards (s) must be as close as possible to the color of the hero’s door, e.g. a purple creature will be happy to see blueberries, but will not necessarily appreciate the red sled or the grandfather’s jaw. We can reveal to the other participants of the game what color of the card we are playing, but we cannot show it. After scanning, it is not possible to change your mind, so we discard the mentioned card to the discard pile. If we have played a card with a special ability, we must use it immediately (detailed information on “Abilities” can be found in the application settings).
The final of the game
The app notifies us if we managed to feed the creature. If we fill the bellies of all heroes on a given level, we win! The levels that we have completed are saved on your phone or tablet, allowing you to unlock new places. As time goes on, we need more decks: Forest, Junkyard, and Museum. Each new location provides more items, special abilities, and additional types of creatures to feed.
Andreas Wilde, the creator of the game, made himself known to fans of cooperative games some time ago. His project – Soviet Kitchen Unleased – gained positive reviews from critics and delighted young players. Hungry is a similar proposition, aimed at efficiently combining colors by young players and their guardians. The game was released as part of the new Lucky Duck Kids line. It is recommended for players over six years of age. I dare to say that for adults the game will not be so exciting (e.g. due to the hybrid nature of the game – a combination of a board game with an application). However, I think that the short – a maximum of twenty minutes – game will not tire the caregiver, and the child will certainly have a lot of fun!
