Young Skórzewski in the fight for his dreams
Czarna Góra – the title story focuses on the young Skórzewski. Here comes a map that could lead him to wealth. Nevertheless, in order to get them, our hero will have to enter the title of Black Mountain, which is notoriously famous.
Decha – for a change, the story begins at the police station, where Robert Storm must explain to law enforcement officers why he stole a piece of board from the Italians!
Two skulls – As the title suggests, this time Storm will be looking for two skulls, and additionally he will face … the city guard!
GROM – an alternative history of Poland. This time we won independence by detonating an atomic bomb in the center of Warsaw. Unfortunately, as it turns out, our freedom is under threat because an attack has been planned that could lead to a war with Russia. The main character is a certain Henryk, but an equally important figure is Józef Piłsudski himself. An interesting story, but in my opinion, Atomic Roulette ( 2586 steps ) is much better.
Autumn Storm – an intriguing story, because it focuses, among others, on Malwina Skórzewska. As in the Ghosts of Poveglia, we are visiting the south of Europe again, but outside Venice, a trip to Zara is also planned. In the background, World War II and the Nazis looking for an artifact. On the one hand, the story was pleasant to read, on the other – it did not surprise me.
What can I say, all the stories are of a very good standard. In my opinion, the title Czarna Góra is the best , but the stories centered around Robert Storm seemed more interesting to me than the one proposed in, for example, A Friend of Man . As always, I had a very nice time dealing with another work by Pilipiuk, but at the same time I would like to point out that this collection of short stories, unfortunately, does not stand out from the other eleven.
Robert Storm on the trail
I had the pleasure of dealing with the review copy, so I am not able to judge the edition of this book. Nevertheless, while reading, I noticed a very small number of shortcomings, in fact they were small typos that the final correction will surely catch. Fabryka Słów always pampers its books carefully, so I expect that the next volume of Pilipiuk’s stories should be very good. After reading Czarna Góra, I have no concerns about the quality of the text and the edition.
Is it worth reaching for another collection of Pilipiuk’s stories?
Another collection of short stories by Andrzej Pilipiuk is of a very good standard. Here I would especially pay attention to the stories centered around Robert Storm. They are not as good as Kameraus , but they are much better than Other Opportunities ( A friend of man). In addition, I must point out that this volume in no way offers anything new. There has already been a story about an alternative history of Poland. The situation is similar with the other stories. You can feel a slight secondary feeling. Is it wrong? In fact, no, because it’s still enjoyable to read. Pilipiuk can draw the reader into his world. But to tell you the truth, I expected a bigger surprise, something more original. I still hope that there will be a collection that focuses on more variety, because although Dr. Skórzewski or Robert Storm are great characters, I miss crazy ideas from 2586 steps or Tree Butcher .
