The plot of Marie Lu's new book focuses on a game in which people go to virtual reality.
Hakerka
Emika Chen’s life is not easy. She barely has enough money to live on, and the situation is not made easier by the debts she inherited from her father’s death. Additionally, the woman appears in the police records as a hacker. Chen lives in a world where society is addicted to Warcross. This form of entertainment allows users to be whatever they want and do whatever they want. For each activity, points are earned that increase the players’ position in the ranking. A higher place means more privileges. The heroine, using a fake account, cannot build her position. Emika uses the virtual world primarily to search for players involved in illegal activities, but it does not bring her great profits. Looking for a quick income, he decides to break into the game during the International Warcross Championship. However, her plan fails, and the heroine unexpectedly becomes a world sensation. The woman, however, fears that she will soon end up in prison. One day, Emika receives a phone call from the Warcross creator himself– Hideo Tanaki. The man makes the heroine an offer to find the person who wants to stop the game.
Virtual world
We have encountered the theme of virtual reality, which is an opportunity for people to forget about the hardships of everyday existence, in literature more than once. Examples that come to mind are: the book Ready Player One or the series The Way of the Shaman. Reading the novel by Marie Lu, however, I did not have the impression of communing with the repeated pattern once again. The author describes in detail the world in which the heroes live and one gets the impression that just such a future is possible. It is a fascinating prospect, but on the other hand it creates uncertainty and presents the dangers that may arise from dedicating your life to virtual reality. The real world has also been presented very well. It is completely different from the virtual one, but both work well together. I also liked the character of the main character. Emika is sane, doesn’t do anything against logic, and knows exactly what she wants. When something goes wrong, she doesn’t hide in a corner and cry. He wonders how to get out of the situation and survive.Warcross and a stranger who wants to bring it to an end. The rest of the heroes are rather a background for these characters. In the book, in addition to a lot of action and the search for a mysterious hacker, we can also find a love thread. However, it was presented in a subtle way, so I cannot consider its existence as a minus. In my opinion, the book is unfortunately very predictable, except for the twist that occurs at the end of the novel.
Summary
Warcross is an interesting novel set in a detailed reality. It will not be an exaggeration to say that such a future may await humanity. I liked the main character right away, I cheered for her at every step. Despite the predictable plot, the book is quick and pleasant to read. I recommend it especially to lovers of authentic visions of the future that may await mankind.
