Despite the pilot ready and a lot of fan interest, HBO decided to cancel the first "Game of Thrones" spinoff.
After filming the pilot episode for a new series set in a world created by George RR Martin, HBO ultimately chose not to commission the entire season. Thus, the project, which was strongly promoted by, among others, the author of the books about the events of Westeros, fell to an end. Martin announced that the production could be based on the story known from The Long Night . Of the numerous series that HBO prepared to continue to benefit from the popularity of Game of Thrones, this one had the highest priority.
This particular spinoff was supposed to be a prequel set thousands of years before the events of the original series. The plot was to focus on Westeros entering the darkest period of its existence right after the golden age of heroes. The Starks and Lannisters were to reappear from the known families. Viewers could also expect to see the genesis of the White Wanderers. Naomi Watts was cast in the lead role. Jane Goldman was selected as the production showrunner, who of course supervised the work on the pilot. The director of this episode was SJ Clarkson ( Jessica Jones ).
At the same time, it is worth mentioning that another project based on Martin’s books has just gained priority. The next spinoff is also a prequel, but not that far away. The action is to take place no more than two hundred years before Game of Thrones and tells about a civil war between members of the Targaryen family. In this case, work on the pilot has not started yet, but it is probably only a matter of time.
