From a bootblack to a millionaire – “Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge: The Last of the McDuck Clan” vol. 4

The story of Scrooge McKwacz getting rich is probably known to most Poles, not only kaczkofans. I wrote about one of the editions that presented this story here . Is this resume worth reading or recommending to younger colleagues or family members?

Is this release noteworthy?

Well, what completely surprised me were a handful of extras that were missing from previous releases. There were, among others, previously unpublished covers and a kind of prequel to the story in the form of a sketch. The Last of the Clan McDuck is a short 8-page story, presented in a very raw form, which telegraphically presents the history of the McKwacz family from practically the dawn of time (there are ducks fighting at Hadrian’s Wall). In one of the frames there is even an outstanding golfer of the family – Donald McKwacz, who, like his descendant from several generations forward, is not very lucky.

Unfortunately, I have one thing to criticize. Why was this outstanding story divided into two volumes? Was it a cash jump or sticking to the original publishing series? It is true that Egmont warns in his advertisements that this is a “reprint” of a comic we know, but it does not change anything. Fans in Poland are waiting for the full release with good translations and colors (not like it was three years ago) and interesting additions like we will find now.

What about the graphics?

Well, in this volume we find completely different colors than in previous editions. How are they presented? In my opinion, they are quite well composed with the characteristic line of Don Rosa. Nevertheless, for me events such as the burning knight, the falling steamer from the edge of the river, the lightning striking the McDuck Castle or the Scrooge exploding with anger among the animals in the savannah should be more vivid as in the 2000 edition. It is true that the old edition had matte paper, but the colors, not the structure of the paper, make a greater impression on comic book readers.

What about other errors?

Well, if we publish something in Polish, in my opinion we should translate everything. Meanwhile, as in the previous volume from 2017, I am plagued by the lack of English subtitles translated in the main novel. Also, onomatopoeias have not been translated into Polish. The people of Egmont, however, are able to translate well everything, as evidenced by the monthly editions of “Donald Duck”. So why wasn’t this done with the story of the Scrooge?

Overall, the story is something special, and the add-ons can make the reading more pleasant. However, with sadness I must once again criticize the publication, because Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck has not been published in Poland, which would be worthy of this monumental story.

Nasza ocena: 8.2/10

Another volume of adventures of Scrooge and Donald from Don Rosa. Is it worth it? Probably only if you do not have your edition of Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck or you want to have all the volumes from the collection of Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck.
