“Szninkiel” – a masterpiece and legend of the world commission art. A story that has been delighting readers and reviewers for many years. A story that draws a handful of both ancient religious tradition and 20th-century pop culture: from Germanic myths, through the world of Tolkien, to Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”, with the key role of the reinterpreted Christian savior theme. The album known first in black and white, and then in color – and both graphically brilliant! It was supposed to be a nice break for the authors in creating the next volumes of the “Thorgal” series, and it turned out to be a milestone in the popular culture of our time. The famous Belgian screenwriter Jean Van Hamme, co-creator of dozens of adventure, sensational, historical and fantastic series (including “Largo Winch”, “XIII”), and the outstanding Polish cartoonist Grzegorz Rosiński (“Skarga Utraconych Ziem”, “Zemsta hrabiego Skarbek”, “Western”) created an outstanding album in the years 1986–1987, although planned only as a form of rest from the equally well-known throughout Europe adventures of the black-haired Viking … On the planet Daar, from time immemorial, there has been a war between the three powers, in which masses of innocent creatures suffer the most, including the people of low, peaceful Schninkiels. But it is from among them that O’n, the only God, the Creator of the Worlds, chooses the young man who is tasked with bringing an end to eternal war and saving the world. J’on will travel halfway around the planet and see wonders and horrors that he never even suspected existed. But will it be able to bear the burden of being a savior? And every little Schninkiel, even supported by friends who believe in his God-given mission, can he work against the greatest powers in the world? The screenwriter asks the reader a lot of difficult, even basic, questions about religion, civilization or the desires of mortal beings – but he does not give unambiguous or ideologically marked answers. Everyone has to find them on their own. And since the album has been illustrated in a masterful way, visually depicting every aspect of the presented world, we feel that this story is real and concerns not only the characters invented for the comic book, but ourselves – today’s people. Does the weight of the content presented in “Szninkiel” make the story sad and gloomy? Absolutely not! Apart from the fragments requiring the use of pathos or showing the tragic aspects of life, the authors of the comic book do not skimp on humorous or parodic elements, both in the layer of dialogue and events, as well as drawing. There are also aesthetically diverse erotic scenes. Above all, however, we are dealing with a pure, exciting adventure that will keep you in suspense until the last board – right up to the very end of Jon’s story, when we witness the fulfillment of God’s will.
