I found the diary of a participant in a sea expedition that was lost in 1907. It is full of various symbols and riddles. If I can solve them, I might find out what happened this fateful year. However, is there an intriguing story behind these puzzles?
Forty-four puzzles
A gust of wind extinguished a few candles in the room. Letters appeared on the pedestals. What could that mean? The bell is tolling, a clear echo is heard. What could these sounds mean? How to decode them? It’s time to get on with the steam engine. You need to maximize the steam flow. The only question is how to achieve this result? I noticed that most of the sailors have some kind of tattoos, mostly animals. Could there be any mystery to it?
The puzzles are diverse. Until now, I am amazed by the ingenuity of the author, Giorgos Kafas. Puzzles often require different skills from us. Sometimes it is enough to search the Internet, and sometimes we have to be perceptive. There are also puzzles where you need to calculate something or arrange certain elements. Some puzzles are easier than they seem. It also happened that I was looking for unknown what, and the solution was under my breath from the very beginning.
It is worth mentioning that an internet connection is required. On a special page we will check if we have managed to find a solution, but we can also use hints. In addition, it contains some information that is missing in the book. In other words, we will look at the book as often as we will look at the cell phone.
Riddles with riddles, but what about the plot?
And that is the biggest surprise! The 1907 expedition has a storyline. These puzzles really connect, they are part of the story that we learn by reading a dozen-page journal describing the fate of our protagonist. Graphics, descriptions, and even the puzzles themselves can create an atmosphere. In addition, you can feel the inspiration of Lovecraft here, so fans of his work (like me) will be delighted. Although, of course, puzzles remain the heart of this book game, so you can gift yourself with story inserts and have fun too.
Perfect imitation of a diary
The performance is a masterpiece. The invoice of the journal is brilliant. It was as if I was holding a missing leather-bound diary in my hands. For this, the font used adds atmosphere. The entire graphic design is simply a world championship. I could admire how perfectly this journal was made for a long time.
The mind evaporates …
Personally, I do not like “destroying” games or books, so when I played Exit: The Game of Mysteries I did not use scissors even once. It is similar in the case of the Expedition 1907 . All you need is a printer, a little imagination, or a sheet of paper and a pencil. It is possible to read the entire Journal without destroying it in any way. This is a definite advantage of this item. I mentioned Exit for a reason, because in their structure these two items are quite similar to each other. That is why I think that the Expedition 1907 will also work in pairs, because two heads are better than one.
As for replayability, it’s just that kind of game. Once the riddles are solved, we have nothing to go back to. However, I think that after a year it would be easy to reach out and solve a few puzzles. In addition, we are left with a well-made Diary , with an interesting, though short story and extremely suggestive graphics.
… And rebels
The biggest drawback is that there is no solution to the puzzle. We can check what the answer is, but we won’t know how to get to it. I found one puzzle where I solved it after the first hint, but I still don’t know how to come up with the right lead without this little help. Two out of forty-four puzzles completely missed me. And I ran into a typo. It is also worth mentioning the seemingly cool sanity spiral: When we use hints, we lose sanity points, when we solve a puzzle, we regain a few points. Unfortunately, this is pure cosmetics, because nothing comes of it – it doesn’t matter how many points. sanity will be left for us at the end. It’s only a minor flaw on this gem.
Is this a game worth the candle?
I’m not the target of this book game – if I hadn’t had it for review, I wouldn’t have bought it. I lack patience, besides, I am average in solving such a variety of puzzles. Nevertheless, I must admit that I had a lot of fun after all. These amazing puzzles in an atmospheric graphic design, spiced up with an amazing story, create a truly brilliant creation. It was a really great adventure – it’s a shame it’s over!
We would like to thank the FoxGames publisher for submitting the game for review .
