Your favorite exorcist-moonshine – review of the book “Karpie bijem”

Carps Beat is the ninth book about the adventures of Jakub Wędrowycz. What awaits the hero this time?

Seventeen stories

It cannot be denied that the figure of Jakub Wędrowycz, an amateur exorcist and moonshiner, has grown into a true icon of Polish fantasy. Thanks to this state of affairs, stories full of humor and unbelievable, often absurd situations have become. In the ninth book about Jakub, Andrzej Pilipiuk serves readers as many as 17 new stories over a span of just over 400 pages. What can we expect from them? From the newest adventures of Wędrowycz you will learn, among others where did the rubber boots come from, how to use Baba Yaga to fight a German invader who has been killing one person on the same day for several decades, how to fight bird flu and how the heroes plan to deal with queues in the People’s Republic of Poland. In addition, the heroes will necessarily make life difficult for the greatest enemies of the Wędrowycz family, i.e. the Bardaks. Those who have already met Jakub know that he is a degraded and unreformed individual. Often it is his faithful companion Semen who must reason with him. So as you can see, quite a lot will happen in the book.

Centuries of the Grafoman

For many years now, people have caught the fact that when a new book by Andrzej Pilipiuk comes out, he treats this fact as an event and then any other work of culture ceases to exist. I had the same thing in the case of the premiere of Karpie be beaten , because I have a huge fondness for both the author and the characters he created. I have been waiting for the next volumes about the adventures of Jakub with flushed faces, since a friend from primary school lent me the Chronicles of Jakub Wędrowycz . In short, I was completely lost. The series had its better and weaker moments, but I can honestly say that none of the volumes are weak. I hit carpsfits perfectly with the style of its predecessors, offering many new, interesting ideas. The whole collection keeps an equal level, and the use of some themes can surprise you. The style of Pilipiuk, known as the Great Grafoman, remains unchanged. The author tells his stories with great lightness, incorporates humorous elements and the dialect of the inhabitants of Wojsławice, who are not afraid of any, even supernatural, dangers. Some of the texts also allow us to look at the main character differently. The story appears in the story, so there is also no shortage of playing with the form. We have the opportunity to learn about the adventures of the heroes during important historical events. Each subsequent one gives a lot of joy and makes it hard to break away from this collection. Jakub is a hero so universal that he can be placed in any environment, if you have the right idea for the story. It doesn’t matter if it’s past, future, cosmos or an alternative universe. Traditionally, on the back of the book you will find a collection of advertisements offering many interesting services.

Podsumowanie

Carps beat is another great collection of Jakub Wędrowycz’s adventures. Fans of the exorcist and moonshiner in one modest person will find everything that this series is loved for: humor, absurd situations and interesting use of fantasy themes. Everyone should like this book and the whole series. Even those readers who are allergic to fantasy. It is light, nice and fun. For additional impressions, I recommend reading with a glass of good moonshine.
