Seven nature monuments in Ostrołęka did not have any names since 2008. The case was taken up by the Youth City Council of Ostrołęka, which – with the consent of Andrzej Sapkowski himself – proposed calling them names from “The Witcher”.
The seven natural monuments in Ostrołęka have become famous only now, although the project of naming six centuries-old trees was launched in November last year. It aims to positively affect tourism and the image of Ostrołęka and – as we read in the draft resolution –
honor the world-famous work that brought fame to Polish culture and literature.
The project of the Youth City Council of Ostrołęka was warmly received by the public and city authorities. Sixteen councilors were in favor of the resolution, two abstained, while Ryszard Żukowski from PiS opposed giving trees non-Polish names. One vote did not affect the adoption of the resolution, although it definitely extended the approval process.
Our task is to multiply the national heritage. We are offered a non-Polish nomenclature, we are talking about wizards, about rats – said the PiS councilor. He also added that: ash and oaks are male names, and female names are proposed. There is a clear political correctness.
The Witcher fans can now travel to Ostrołęka and face the majesty of seven natural monuments:
- Regis – common ash (Dr. J. Psarski square at ul. Staszica 1);
- Geralt of Rivia – English oak (intersection of ul. Bogusławskiego and 11 Listopada);
- Vesemir – English oak (Poprzeczna Street);
- Buttercup – English oak (at Księcia Mieszka I no. 1);
- Triss Merigold – English oak (at ul. Baśniowa 16);
- Yennefer from Vengerberg – English oak (at 11 Listopada 28);
- Cirilla – English oak (at Księcia Mieszka I no. 1, next to the “Turystyczna” restaurant).
