Blomkamp confirmed via Twitter that he is working on the script for District 10 . He is assisted by his wife Terri Tatchell and the lead actor in the first film, Sharlto Copley. The director, screenwriter and special effects specialist has not had much luck with big projects in recent years. Among those that did not come to fruition was, among others picture from the Alien universe .
Much more often than in the case of high-budget productions, Blomkamp deals with short films. He has nearly 20 of them to his credit. It was thanks to one of them – Alive in Joburg – that Peter Jackson drew the attention of the young filmmaker. Initially, the director of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy promoted him as a serious candidate for the screening of the Halo series of games . American producers, however, decided not to work with an inexperienced director. This did not stop him, however, and with Jackson’s help he made his first full-length film.
The action of District 9 takes place in South Africa, twenty years after the aliens came to Earth. However, they are not invaders, but refugees looking for a new home. Due to their appearance, aliens are nicknamed “Shrimp”. The newcomers are quickly locked in the ghetto where it gets more and more dangerous every day. The painting was inspired by the aforementioned Alive in Joburg . Both productions deal with the subject of discrimination and strongly refer to the Apartheid that used to prevail in South Africa.
