The studio behind the recently released title The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is apparently working on another game. This time, Daedalic received a grant of 2 million euros, so as not to repeat the defeat after Gollum .
The Lord of the Rings is one of the most loved series – from books to movies and games. The latter have so far been usually successful and appreciated by fans, even if only slightly based on the world created by Tolkien. One of the best installments of the mid-2010s, Shadow of Mordor was a great addition to the Lord of the Rings mythology , both easily accessible to those who are unfamiliar with the series, as well as die-hard fans.
However, the latest approach to this universe has been a complete disaster. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is being attacked in reviews and criticized on social media. Developer Daedalic Entertainmentapologized for the state the game was released in and promised a better product through updates. However, the title has the lowest score for a game released in 2023, with an overall rating of 36 on Metacritic. This is probably one of the worst installments released in recent times. However, it looks like the studio will get a second chance. German website Wirtschaft noted that Daedalic received a €2 million grant from the German Ministry of Economics to create a game set in a “lush world full of mythical creatures and magic” and tell “a story from a character’s perspective that has never been told before.” This last part seems to imply that this is a character we already know.
This sounds very similar to what the team did with Gollum, but it’s not clear if it will be a sequel to that game or a completely different character. It’s quite possible, but for now fans will have to wait and see what comes of it.
