While only a handful of Neil Gaiman’s books have made a movie adaptation, one of the earliest remains of the fan-favorite 2009 animated Coraline . Directed by Henry Selick, the film was Laika’s first full-length film and was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Since the book was released in 2002 and the film came out seven years later, there is a great deal of interest not only in the story itself, but also that Gaiman might film a sequel to it. In a new interview with ComicBook.com, Gaiman announced that he “absolutely does not rule it out.”

“I wouldn’t have done the second part of Coraline if I couldn’t have come up with a story that was as good as the last one. And so far I haven’t come up with (anything)… If you’re going to do something, it has to be at the level of Toy Story 2 or the second installment of The Godfather, where the story actually unfolds well, ”Gaiman confirmed.

Fans likely have the same requirement to read or watch Coraline 2 as he had written. In the past, when rumors of a live-action version of the story surfaced (which were not true), small protests broke out on the web.

Given Gaiman’s prolific output during his writing career, it’s surprising that the number of direct sequels to his books is… minimal. The sequels to Good Omen , American Gods and Nowhere are announced , but have yet to be released. The second season of Good Omen on Amazon Prime Video will apparently tell a story that would be a sequel to the novel, with American Gods being canceled before season 2 began.

Netflix’s adaptation of The Sandman , which has been in the works for decades, is the author’s latest success. Gaiman’s comic has been around for three decades, and he himself witnessed attempts to revive it in live-action, which were almost unsuccessful.
