Who is your god idol? – review of the DVD release of “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”

Ever since I heard that the best animation I’ve seen this year will be on DVD, I knew I had to have it. My impressions after the second screening of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish are even better than the first time.

Zawadiak’s cat

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is about the famous ginger tomcat from Shrek . He led a life filled to the brim with adventures . Thanks to his pugnacity and frivolity, he did not care about anything. Until he had the last of his nine lives left. The main character goes through a kind of professional burnout, and later, together with old and new companions, they go on an adventure that may be the key to regaining lost lives (or to something more). Cat, Kitty Cattrap and Perrito must get to the Wish-granting Star as quickly as possible. It won’t be that easy, as they are hot on their heels with Goldilocks and the Three Bears, as well as the menacing, slightly unpredictable Jacek Placek, who has countless magical, dangerous artifacts.

Throughout the entire production, the titular Cat undergoes a truly dynamic transformation. At the beginning we find him as he has always been – daring, self-confident, swashbuckling, a bit too narcissistic. During his new adventure, he changes beyond recognition, while allowing us to draw an important and wise moral from this production. He learns to appreciate the people who stay by his side and to use life wisely.

For the young and for the old

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish not only takes the viewer on a captivating and intriguing adventure, but is also very versatile. The message of the animation will certainly move most viewers, and the comedy accents will appeal to the older and the younger ones. The character of the main character also works in favor of the film – younger viewers will undoubtedly fall in love with the charismatic Cat at first sight, and the slightly older ones already know him well, thanks to which they will also have a great time. The feeling of excitement in older audiences may be heightened by fondness for Shrek . Does The Last Wish resemble him at all?

This is my favorite aspect of the new Puss in Boots . As soon as I found out that this production was planned, I was counting on the return of Shrek’s sense of humor and unique atmosphere to the big screen. I was not disappointed. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish entertains as much as Shrek , does not deviate from the standards imposed by the 2001 animation, and at the same time feels a breath of fresh air from it. The creators hit the golden mean perfectly, which makes Puss in Boots a film for everyone.

The new animation from DreamWorks also has a great Polish translation. Just like in the case of Shrek , the Polish language version is unique in its own way – in many moments more funny than the original. The translators did a phenomenal job, weaving expressions into the dialogues of the characters that only people who know the Polish cultural context will understand.

Spanish rhythms

The great advantage of the new Puss in Boots is its music and graphics. From the very beginning of the show, the ginger tom spins, dances and sings (sometimes also fights with giants) to Latin and Spanish rhythms. The music and songs in the Polish and English version sound so cheerful and lively that it’s hard not to tap your foot to their rhythm while watching. The most catchy song Who is your divine idol? which perfectly reflects the character of the Cat.

It is worth paying attention to the visual aspect of production. The animation style is also reminiscent of Shrek in this respect , while bringing a lot of its own. DreamWorks aesthetics has been enriched with colorful effects and interesting character designs that stay in the memory for a long time.

The DVD edition looks aesthetically pleasing. I want to pay special attention to the cover that caught my eye – it shows the three main characters of the whole intrigue, led by the Cat. On the disc, the animation can be viewed in Polish, English, Czech, Spanish and Slovak, with subtitles in each of the previously mentioned language versions.

More!

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is definitely a production worth recommending, which is worth returning to at home, even if you have seen the animation in the cinema. An interesting plot, characters known from fairy tales, extraordinary heroes playing the first violin and Latin rhythms create a whole that you cannot tear yourself away from. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish won my heart and took a stable first place in the “Best Animation 2023” category.
