Film New Mutants was to have its premiere April 13, 2018 year. However, it was postponed several times. Ultimately, the picture is expected to hit theaters on August 26, 2020. So it’s time to meet our New Mutants!
History of the group
New Mutants is a comic book created by Marvel. Its originators and authors were Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. The young homosuperiori made their debut on the market in September 1982. Initially, the team included Wolfsbane, Karma, Psyche, Sunspot and Cannonball. Over the years, the composition of the group has changed. It was filled with characters such as Magik, Magma, Mirage, Warlock, Cypher, Boom-Boom or the film Deadpool 2 Cable and Domino. Although the heroes came and went, over the years there was always at least one person from the original squad in the team. It is also worth mentioning that the New Mutants were initially only a spin-off of the X-Men series. With time, however, they joined the Xavier Institute and, although they remained under their own name, they collaborated with Cyclops, Storm and Wolverin, and with time they even became teachers at the aforementioned school. They also joined forces with X-Force, and sometimes with the Avengers. The film, which is to finally hit theaters at the end of the summer holidays, will obviously refer to the adventures known from notebooks. It is intended to show the origins of New Mutants. On the screen we will see three heroes from the original line-up (Wolfsbane, Cannonball and Sunspot), the two who joined the team later (Magik and Mirage), as well as a character belonging to the comics not from the New Mutants, but to the X-Men – Cecilia Reyes. The history of each character is so extensive that a separate article could be written about it. However, I will try to present the youth and abilities of mutants and mention some more interesting events in their lives.

Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane
Rahne Sinclair, also known as Wolfsbane, is from Scotland. He is an illegitimate child of unknown names. Her mother died in childbirth and the girl probably bears her last name, although this has not been officially confirmed. The orphan was taken care of by a Presbyterian priest named Craig. It is quite possible that he was her real father, but there is no evidence for that either. Either way, Rahne did not have an easy childhood. She was brought up according to strict discipline, without any love, but in the conviction that for the slightest sin she could go to hell. For this reason, she had considerable mental problems in the future. At the age of thirteen, her powers made themselves felt. The girl began to turn into a wolf. Her guardian saw this as Satan’s actions and decided to get rid of the demon by killing Rahne. To this end, he even organized a manhunt, summoning local residents to help. However, the mutant managed to escape. Injured and exhausted, she ended up at Moira MacTagger’s estate, which not only saved her from a clergyman, but also adopted, and then took her to the United States to introduce her to her friend – Charles Xavier. It was he who explained to her that the powers did not come from the devil and she did not need to fear them. Rahne quickly became friends with Dani Moonstar and helped defeat Donald Pierce and his men at the Hellfire Club. During her numerous adventures she was, among others kidnapped and drugged. This event would probably have ended her death if Cloak, Dagger and Spider-Man had not come to her aid. Unfortunately, after a while the narcotic drugs influenced her, completely changing her personality. Then she attacked her recent saviors, taking away the powers of two of them. In this case, the three were helped by another New Mutants member – Magic – who restored everything to normal. It is also worth mentioning that Rahne was considered the goddess and mother of Remus and Romulus in Nova Roma, as well as her lover, Hrimhari, whom she met while visiting Asgard.
As for Rahne Sinclair’s personality, she was a very shy person through the influence of Reverend Craig. She has always had problems with making friends, especially with men. In addition, she had huge complexes about her appearance and for a very long time considered herself extremely unattractive, even repulsive. And although she understood that her power was not a curse and no demon lived in her, the fear of Hell was in her almost all the time.
Finally, let’s mention the powers of Rahne. Even her nickname, Wolfsbane, seems to speak for itself. The mutant can be safely called a lycanthrope. As I mentioned, she was able to turn into a wolf as a child and did not need a full moon for that. Over time, she also learned to take an intermediate form between humans and animals, transforming into a typical werewolf. After such a transformation, her physical strength, agility and reflexes always increase, as well as the senses such as smell, sight and hearing sharpen. When it takes its unusual form, it also activates a regenerating factor that has not been fully tested so far. It is known, however, that most of the wounds inflicted on her heal almost immediately. In New Mutants , the role of Wolfsbane will be played by Maisie Williams, who most viewers know primarily as Arya Stark from the TV series Game of Thrones . On the screen we will also see the figure of Pastor Craig, played by Happy Anderson.
Sam Guthrie/Cannonball
Samuel Guthrie aka. Cannonball, comes from Cumberland, Kentucky, USA. He is the eldest son of Thomas and Lucinda. Already at the age of eleven, he met representatives of the Deviant race, which in turn is the creation of the Celestials. However, he does not remember anything about these events, because his memories were erased by a mutant called Sledge. He himself was a great student who even received a college scholarship, but dropped out of his studies when his father suddenly died. As a 16-year-old, he joined the mine, feeling that his family’s support was on his shoulders. Once, when he was underground, there was a crash and the tunnel the boy was in began to collapse. It was then that Samuel’s power was revealed. His lower body, as it were, exploded, throwing him upwards like a cannonball. In this way, he saved his life, and one of the miners he had caught and taken with him. This event did not escape the attention of Donald Pierce, who recruited the young man to the Hellfire Club and put him up to fight against Xavier and his new students. He even had the chance to kill a few opponents, but he refused to do what infuriated Pierce, but also caught Professor X’s attention. He managed to get Guthrie to switch sides and was drafted into the New Mutants. He even led this group for a time; anyway, he was the oldest in it. However, he was ashamed of the fact that, compared to others, he was the worst at mastering his powers. During numerous adventures he visited Asgard, was a member of the X-Factor and X-Force, and fought against the Shi’Ar Empire and the Kingpin mafia. In the so-called meanwhile he was even killed by Sauron and then rose again.
Samuel Guthrie came from a family with many children. He had three brothers and five sisters. Most of them were also mutants. There have even been theories that members of this family are not human but belong to the Externali race, though this has not been confirmed in any way.
Finally, let’s tackle the Cannonball powers. As already mentioned, it could launch like a projectile. Thanks to the thermochemical energy that is generated when his lower body “explodes”, Sam can fly at tremendous speed. The resulting force field makes him almost invulnerable. By the way, he can absorb kinetic energy, which he then uses to strengthen his blows.
The New Mutants Sam Guthrie Heaton plays Charlie, whose perfectly fans of the series know Stranger Things – that’s what he plays there in the form of Jonathan Byers.
Roberto da Costa / Sunspot
Roberto da Costa is the son of the Brazilian millionaire Emmanuel da Costa and the American archaeologist Nina. His powers were revealed when he was fourteen. Then, during a football match, two opposing players who hated da Costa because of the color of his skin, first foul him violently and then started kicking him. His body and clothes burst into flames, and he threw the attackers far away. All the players and viewers fled in panic then, and only the boy’s father and girlfriend, Juliana Sandoval, came to his aid. As with Cannonball, Donald Pierce, the then leader of the Hellfire Club, learned about Roberto’s power. However, he decided not to recruit the boy to his group, but to kill him. To this end, he kidnapped Juliana and set a trap for da Costa. Charles Xavier found out about the whole action and, together with Karma and Psyche, went to the rescue. In an attempt to free the hostage, a shootout ensued, during which Sandoval took a bullet intended for her lover and died. Then Bobby swore revenge on Pierce. To this end, he agreed to join the team formed by Professor X. At the Institute for Talented Youth, he quickly learned how to control and use his powers. He also made friends with Sam Guthrie. During his many adventures, he was injected with a virus and attacked Cloak and Dagger as well as Colossus. He was cured only by the Magician. He visited Asgard with the other New Mutants, studied under Magneto and was controlled by Psylocke. In addition to New Mutants, he also belonged to X-Force, X-Corp, Gladiators and Fallen Angels.
Roberto da Costa, or Sunspot, drew his powers directly from solar energy. He transformed her into superhuman strength. Thanks to her, he could also fly. He can also store this energy and store it in his body until needed. Therefore, his abilities can also be activated at night. When using them, his body is shrouded in darkness as he removes any external light from his skin. Sunspot is also incredibly fast, has superhuman reflexes, increased endurance, can cause thermokinetic shocks or generate strong blasts of hot wind. It is completely resistant to fire and high temperatures, but also to cold – even being outside the Earth’s atmosphere does not impress him. Interestingly, his body is able to produce its own food.
In New Mutants , Roberto will be played by Henry Zaga, who you could see as Josh Diaz in Teen Wolf: The Teen Werewolf . It is worth adding that we could watch Sunspot on the big screen once. He appeared in the movie X-Men: A Past To Come . Then he was played by Adan Canto.
Danielle Moonstar / Psyche (later Mirage)
Danielle “Dani” Moonstar was raised on a ranch near Boulder, Colorado. Her childhood was happy until she was ten. It was then that her powers were revealed. Nightmare about the death of her parents and the Demon Bear came back to her every night. When they disappeared during a mountain trip, the girl believed that they were actually dead. And not only her. Although their bodies were not found, the government declared them dead anyway, and Dani went to live with her grandfather, the Black Eagle, chief and shaman of the tribe of Cheyenne. It was he who taught Danielle meditation, thanks to which she not only began to master her telepathic abilities, but also developed an empathetic bond with animals. Seeing what was happening to his granddaughter, Black Eagle contacted his good friend Charles Xavier, wanting to put her in his care. This fact infuriated the girl so much that she sent a vision of his own death on her guardian. Ultimately, however, she found herself under the wing of Professor X. Soon after, Donald Pierce discovered her trail. As soon as he found out that Moonstar was not in the Indian village, he and his men beat her grandfather to death. Dani avenged her relative’s wickedness when she and the New Mutants group dealt with Pierce and his Hellfire Club. Then she began her exercises at school. Still, she was haunted by the vision of the Demon Bear. Xavier suspected she had schizophrenia, and Dani herself even wanted to commit suicide, which was dissuaded by other colleagues from the group. Over time, Danielle became the leader of New Mutants. She also showed her independence and introduced ethnic elements into the standard uniform. Finally, she also decided to defeat the Demon Bear, whose visions grew stronger and stronger. She summoned him in physical form and fought him, which she almost paid with her life. Morlock saved her, and the demon was finally killed by Magician with her Soul Sword. Moonstar was then kidnapped by Loki to Asgard, where the other Mutants followed her again. She also fought Hela, the goddess of death. For her heroism, she received a winged horse from Valkyries and was recognized as an honorary member of her group. Over time, it turned out to be a great move, because when Hela returned and deprived Valkyrie of free will, it was Dani who saved them from oppression and saved Odin himself from death. Later she studied with Magneto and Emma Frost. SHIELD also used her abilities, for which she infiltrated the terrorist organization Mutant Liberation Front. She was also part of the X-Force group for a while, but left it after an argument with Cablem. Eventually she became the caretaker of the New Mutants Squad. Currently, her powers remain blocked by the Scarlet Witch.
Danielle Moonstar, who nicknamed herself Mirage, was able to create astral images that represented the deepest fears or desires of the person under her influence. Initially, it was only one tangible illusion. Over time, her powers developed so much that Dani used psionic plasma to create a weapon (usually a bow and arrow) and attack her opponent. In this way, she caused her victim attacks of anxiety, sometimes even leading to death. It also formed a telepathic bond with mammals and birds that could transmit information to her or carry out simple commands. In Asgard, she also learned to see death approaching people, with which she could fight to save a person.
In New Mutants , Danielle Moonstar will be played by Blu Hunt, the American actress best known for her role as August in the series Another Life .
Illyana Rasputin / Magik
Ilyana Rasputin is the youngest child of Nikolai and Alexandra Rasputin. She was born and raised in Siberia. Of all the New Mutants presented in the article, she is probably the most recognizable one. Firstly because of his brother Peter, known as Colossus, who had quite large roles in films such as X-Men: The Last Stand and Deadpool. Secondly, there is no question of a random coincidence of names here – the girl’s great-grandfather was the famous favorite of the tsarist family, Grigory Rasputin. But let’s get back to Ilyana herself. As a child, she was a hair from death under the wheels of a speeding tractor. Then she was saved by the aforementioned Piotr, who in this way used his powers for the first time and shortly afterwards he went to the school run by Charles Xavier. When Arcade was imprisoned by Dr. Doom, his assistant, Miss Locke, kidnapped people close to the X-Men in order to get the group to help free her boss. Among the abductees was also a young Rasputin. After her release, however, she did not go home – Piotr wanted to keep his sister with him, and Xavier gladly agreed. He knew that the girl was also a mutant and he wanted to explore her potential. The girl quickly acclimated to the new place and became friends with Kitty Pryde. Some time later Ilyana accidentally teleported to the Limbo dimension, where an evil wizard named Balasco intended to teach her black magic and make her heir. To achieve his goal, he placed fragments of her soul in the Blood Stones and thus imprisoned her in his castle. Her second teacher was Storm (or rather her alternative version from the Limbo dimension), who showed the girl how to use white magic. Rasputin herself did not know what power was hidden in her. She managed not only to create a disk with which she escaped from the castle, but also to focus her energy to conjure a Soul Sword and fight Balasco, whom she defeated and spared, so that she herself would not become such an evil creature as him. She also gave up the possibility of becoming the ruler of Limbo and returned to Earth. For a long time, she hid the truth about her fate. She was able to do this thanks to strong protection against telepathy and the ability to erase the memory of others. Over time, however, more and more people learned the truth. Ilyana had to save her friends from oppression very often. She defeated, among others the demon S’ym, freed Kitty from the hands of the White Queen, helped Colossus in the fight against the Dark Phantoms, killed the Demon Bear who harassed Dani Moonstar, clashed with the Beyonder, or seized New Mutants at the hands of Baby Yagi. Ilyana had to save her friends from oppression very often. She defeated, among others the demon S’ym, freed Kitty from the hands of the White Queen, helped Colossus in the fight against the Dark Phantoms, killed the Demon Bear who harassed Dani Moonstar, clashed with the Beyonder, or seized New Mutants from the hands of Baby Yagi. Ilyana had to save her friends from oppression very often. She defeated, among others the demon S’ym, freed Kitty from the hands of the White Queen, helped Colossus in the fight against the Dark Phantoms, killed the Demon Bear who plagued Dani Moonstar, clashed with Beyonder, or seized New Mutants from the hands of Baby Yagi.
It is difficult to say what exactly mutations Ilyana Rasputin had in her. It was likely a teleportation ability, but could not be confirmed. Her powers only developed in the Limbo dimension. It was there that she learned to control the disks and use them to move from place to place. In addition, she mastered the elements of white and black magic. No wonder she was nicknamed the Magician. It was thanks to these abilities that she was able to create mystical armor, protecting her from physical and mental attacks. Its most important ability, however, was the ability to summon the Soul Sword, which is able to break any spell and drain the spiritual essence of other people, thus even leading to the death of the opponent.
In the film, the New Mutants Ilyanę play Rasputin Anya Taylor-Joy. This American actress is known for such productions as Split , Glass , Skłodowska and Emma . She also appeared in several episodes of the Peaky Blinders series and lent her voice to Brei from Dark Crystal: Time of Rebellion .
Cecilia Reyes
Cecilia Reyes is of Puerto Rican descent who was born and raised in New York City. Her father – Alejandro Reyes – was shot in front of her when Cecilia was six years old. It was then that she decided to become a doctor. After years of study, she became one of the best trauma surgeons in the USA. Shortly after she started working at a hospital in the Bronx, her powers were revealed. She then contacted Professor Xavier, who offered her a place in his school, but Cecilia refused, preferring to keep her mutant status a secret. However, when she was attacked by an anti-mutant group during Operation Zero Tolerance and rescued by Iceman, she had no choice but to join the X-Men group. She managed not only to defeat Bastion, but also to save Cyclops’s life when she removed the bomb from his chest. She has also operated on Daredevila several times. However, when her identity was revealed, she was fired from her job and permanently joined the group of mutants. For a while, she was also addicted to a drug called Rave and tempted by the Shadow King. She also fought against the Neo group. For a time she was imprisoned in the concentration camp for mutants Neverland, from which she managed to escape, although unfortunately she lost her memory then. Since she did not return to her friends, she was presumed dead. Meanwhile, she worked in shelters for the homeless, where she cured, among others, Tatiana Caban. The latter, in turn, later told the whole story of the Beast who brought Cecilia home and, together with the other homo superior, restored her memories. she was fired from her job and permanently joined the group of mutants. Cecilia Reyes has one power – a protective barrier is created around her body, increasing her endurance. It is a psioplasmic biofield that constantly surrounds her, whether the woman wants it or not. It reacts self-consciously, protecting it from threats. Over time, Cecilia learned to surround her fists with it to increase the power of her blows and to create spikes from it with which she can shoot enemies.
While Cecilia Reyes was never part of the New Mutants group, she will appear in the film. She will be played by Alice Braga, whom you may know from such paintings as City of God , I Am a Legend , Predators or Ritual .
