When you do not know if what you see is true – review of the book “The Sinner”

There are novels that you just read, put away, and nothing is left of it. Another fleeting story that pops out of your head right after reading it. I know that they are also needed, but I prefer others. Leaving a mess in the brain and a very intense book hangover. The title must shock me, break my world into tiny fragments so that I have to put it together myself. I want such titles, I expect them and I look forward to them.

Thrill

And that’s what I get when I read Artur Urbanowicz’s books. I thought it couldn’t get any better than The Branches , but the Sinner is a different level of power entirely. It’s something hard to describe, but I will try to capture the magic of the novel. I read the first edition and the newest one from Vesper. The story is still good, but you can see that the author tried to add a few flavors and smooth out the shortcomings. In addition, the new edition is simply beautiful, and the illustrations add extra flavor to the whole.

A little introduction

Marek Suchy Suchocki is a gangster and not just any gangster. The boss of the Suwałki neighborhood. Everyone has heard of him, no one can jump on him, otherwise the punishment can be very severe. Everything changes when Gabriel Samiel Samielewicz returns. Previously, he had the lands of Suchy under his boot. Now he wants them back. This is where the fun begins.

Marek loses everything overnight. Health first: he gets pushed down the stairs, has a serious head injury, and lies in a coma for a week. The rest is a downward spiral because it loses its people and all its money. There are two ways out: work for the Sinner or death. The main character’s ego rebels, but Samiel is very persuasive, he reads every intention and thought. He is a cunning psychopath to be feared. Fear increases as Mark discovers unusual abilities. Was it because of an accident? How is the character supposed to cope with the new reality?

Where is the top and where is the bottom?

O all who read this and those at the top that you support. What was that? How it was? Where? What? As? Welcome to my world after reading The Sinner . Artur Urbanowicz showed that I really know nothing about anything, and certainly about predicting the content. There, nothing could be taken for granted. Even the ending itself makes me really don’t know what to think about it. She is so open. How will it go? Is it still a dream, or maybe a reality with a new spectrum?

Marek is a brutal man who does not mince words. He made his money on gangster. The Suwałki Region is its area. Beatings, extortions, thefts, collecting money “for protection” are the norm for him. He is backed up by his back protection group and helps with problems. He has a wife and two children, but it does not prevent him from meeting his lover by chance. A bar called Beerma is his relatively legal business and at the same time a cover for other activities. The main character is a very confident man. He believes that he has grabbed God by the legs, nothing can shake his status. Until the title Sinner returns. The earlier boss of the area successively takes from Sucha everything that is most valuable for him. It inspires trust and makes Marek start working for him.

The book goes on with its heroes

Both men are charismatic and self-confident. The main character is more crazy. It can be easily upset. They are often planted into brawls. The sinner Samiel is a person of great inner peace. He had given up any temptation that might have made him weak. Alcohol, women and other drugs are not for him. He can see the other person in no time. As if he was reading his mind … Both outfits are very well drawn. The author showed two completely different personalities. The difference between them is dramatic.

The book presents human weaknesses. As under the influence of specific situations, a person can adapt and look at life in a completely different way. I really like this theme. You can discover many interesting things, even about yourself, by reacting to specific situations. There are many references to morality as well as faith and religion. The threads are not intrusively pressed in, but rather woven between a series of events. Thanks to this, the book shows the second bottom of Artur Urbanowicz’s work.

Interesting threads

I was most interested in the references to the theme of hypocrisy. The main character was not disturbed by his own actions, but if someone behaved in the same way towards him – he fell into a rage. It was changing gradually, but not enough to affect his worldview. Fact – the experienced situations made him look completely different at many aspects, but still the old tendencies remained.

There was also a possession theme. I have the impression that the paranormal aspects are a fixed point in the author’s work. And very well. It shows a completely different side of a well-worn thread. I must admit that I liked his vision very much. Why? Because it is intertwined with an element of mystery and to surprise the reader when he discovers what is really going on. There were a few moments where I normally sucked in air. But how? So I let myself be led out of the field? The author simply has a gift. Some things are predictable, but others are definitely not. You can see that the artist is developing on the topic of building tension. He creates more and more new theories, until he is afraid of what will be in the next novel …

The author is worth his weight in gold

The Sinner is a crime story, a sensation, a horror story with a paranormal plot. It is very much based on faith, especially Christian, the temptation and demonic forces are very clearly outlined. The author shows the weaknesses of the human character well. It really makes you think and analyze your own life. At least that was the case with me. Are they really good deeds dictated by empathy, or maybe through them selfish motives?

Artur Urbanowicz writes in a very interesting, yet descriptive way. If you don’t like exact quoting, you may be overloaded at one point. Apart from this one drawback, I don’t see any other. The creator is one of the best authors of the genre for me. I dare say that they are the best on the domestic market. It is impossible to take away from the book. The story is paranormal, but at the same time it is vital. It presents truths that we forget on a daily basis. Artur recalls them step by step.

And at the end

Phew… I recommend it with all my heart. I don’t know a second author who would drill into my brain like that. Maybe King, but for a little different reason. The creator reads my fears and puts them on paper each time. Arthur! You can’t. The tape will end soon, and what am I going to do? Because of the creator, I do not put my back to the mirror hanging in the hall. Okay, there’s one and not a whole corridor, but whatever. Guarded … I also like the procedure that the creator used at the end. He referred directly to the reader and, in simple terms, drew attention to individual elements. I will definitely read the book again. I am terrified, delighted and waiting for more. I know, I just know that any book that comes with it is just going to be good. Darkness will never be the same again.
