When you are alone … watch “Hook” – the anniversary of its premiere

Today we are celebrating the anniversary of the premiere of the film, which received several Oscar nominations – for set design, costumes, special effects, make-up, and the icing on the cake was the one for the song When You’re Alone.

As one of the hosts said at the ceremony of presenting the most important film awards, Peter Pan is one of the most beloved stories of all time. And it was “taken to the workshop” by many artists. The 1991 version, about which we are writing today, is perhaps the most famous and appreciated by viewers.

The main star was a rather surprisingly cast Robin Williams. He played the very busy lawyer Peter, who is always on the talking brick (that is, the cell phone at the time). When his children are abducted, a guest from the old days (when he was still little and believed in fairy tales) appears – the Tinkerbell fairy (Julia Roberts). But my beloved character is a little like Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook. In a long wig, mustache and bushy eyebrows, he is the perfect black hero. Hook is an old enemy of Peter who needs to remember what it is like to be Peter Pan. He returns to Neverland to save the children …

This production also starred Bob Hoskins, Maggie Smith, and cameo roles as Glenn Close, musician David Crosby, and even as a pair of George Lucas and Carrie Fisher and Gwyneth Paltrow as a young Wendy.

The film was directed by the immortal Steven Spielberg, who is like King Midas – turns everything he touches to gold. Spielberg had a personal relationship to this story (as he said in interviews – neither his father had time for him, nor he had time for his children).

Jim V. Hart, the screenplay writer, recalled a conversation with his son:

In 1986, our family was having dinner and Jake said, “Daddy, has Peter Pan ever grown up?” My immediate answer was, “No, of course not,” and Jake replied, “What if he did?” I realized that Peter really grew up, and so did all of the baby boomers in our 40s now. I took the example of some of my friends in Wall Street, where pirates wear three-piece suits and drive limos.

The picture became a cult film, five Oscar nominations (and one Golden Raspberry for Julia Roberts …), and was a commercial success (even though the director himself was not entirely satisfied with it). Gadgets and games followed suit.

Apparently, Michael Jackson himself wanted to play Peter Pan, but he did not know that the script is quite different from the original Barrie. The budget has been significantly exceeded. It was supposed to cost $ 48 million; cost about 80 million. The shooting should have taken 76 days, but due to the difficulties of working with children and many extras, it took 116 days. But it all worked out and today Hook is enjoying watching.

I only have one comment. Nobody should die in kids’ movies, or at least nobody should die, right?

First lesson. Why Do Parents Hate Their Children? Do you remember No? It’s time to refresh this classic movie for the whole family …
