When his old acquaintance, Akiedystrava, appeared in Panoramiks dreams, the druid immediately packed his bags and set off with little Gaul and his best friend. On the spot, it turned out that the matter did require intervention. The Romans captured the shaman’s niece and decided to go to the Sarmatians to steal their holy animal – the griffin. Caesar’s envoys do not know, however, that only Akiedystrava can lead them to the creature, so Asterix, Obelix and extremely brave women from the Sarmatian village decide to use their advantage and approach their opponents with deception. Along the way, of course, they encounter several unforeseen situations, including the fact that one of the warriors decides to choose a menhir bearer as her partner. After all, as is the case in the adventures of clever Gauls,
Fantastic names of Roman legionnaires
The comics of Goscinny and Uderzo have entertained me for many years. However, they do not always present the same level of humor or attractiveness of the story presented. In the case of notebook 19, I got the impression that the events were quite lazy and there was little action in them. The whole is based on the one hand on wandering in search of the griffin, on the other – stopping the attempts of the legionnaires. I haven’t received many battles with the Romans or the spectacular feats of the Gallic duo. From the very beginning, they also struggled with many difficulties – and this magic drink froze, and it was Idefix who escaped, and on top of that, Obelix suffered from drinking a local specialty. In addition, the captured niece of the shaman broke the order in the wards with her unique beauty and abundant curves (because everyone wanted to guard her). The comic had many short funny scenes, but as a whole it was a bit boring with the low pace of the action. However, the fantastic translation by Marek Puszczewicz is noteworthy, as it adds a current character to many moments. Without looking too far: the legionnaire who spreads the wrong information was named Fakenius, and the Scythians admit they read Wikiquote from Tacitus.
The master’s spirit was surrendered
Asterix and the Griffin is the fifth comic created by the duo Jean-Yves Ferri and Dider Conrad, but at the same time the first one that was not supervised by Uderzo. In such a situation, as a fan of the title, I was afraid that the spirit of Asterix and Obelix would be sufficiently devoted and the formula of their adventures would be maintained. Fortunately, nothing bad happened. On the one hand, it was perhaps not the best comic book about my beloved Gallas, on the other – it did not stand out so much from other, in my opinion, weaker, notebooks. The drawing style is still fantastically detailed and has some funny events in the background at times, so it’s also hard to fault.
What else will they surprise us with in the future?
While fans of the title may like the new part of Gallic adventures, I would not recommend starting your adventures with this series from this album. The comic book is certainly not outstanding, but it is still worth getting to know. There are funny situations, we also get to know Idefix from his more untamed side, and the joyful chuckle under his breath is evoked by the names of the legionnaires, which in general makes a pretty good publication.
