The War of the Worlds is Marvel’s crowning event in this year’s comic books published in Poland. The most important part of the story is the album with this title – Wojna światów (org. War of the Realms ), which premiere is planned by Egmont on June 1 this year. However, to fully appreciate the entirety of the War of the Worlds , it is also worth reading the comics that lead to this event, and those that refer to it.
The original title of the album – War of the Realms – indicates that it is about something very different from the War of the Worlds , which readers have known for over a hundred years from HG Wells’ novels. This is not a battle between Earth and Mars that has hit the screen multiple times. The English “Realms” refers to a part of the Marvel universe, which draws from Norse mythology and appears most often in Thor comics. Our Earth is Midgard. Thunderer Thor, his family and other gods inhabit Asgard, and there are other worlds in which elves, dwarves, giants and other mythical creatures live.
All of this was established more than half a century ago by the famous comic book authors of the first Thor stories – Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Over the decades that followed, other creators developed the story in different directions, but the basic principles remained the same – Asgard, Midgard, and seven other worlds. Thor and other noble gods, and against them – sometimes his cunning stepbrother Loki, sometimes the ruler of the underworld Hela, and sometimes the leader of the dark elves, Malekith the Cursed. All these plots and characters have become much more recognizable thanks to the cinematic films produced by Marvel / Disney. The next, fourth film about Thor will be released in theaters on July 8, 2022.
War of the Worlds is largely the work of one very hardworking and popular comic book writer – Jason Aaron. It was he who in 2013 took over the writing of the adventures of a comic book by the Nordic god and has consistently led this character over the years, preparing him and many other plots for this great climax. Although the slogan “war of the worlds” does not appear for the first time in Mighty Thor – Lords of Midgard , it is worth finding out where Thor came from, who is not Odin’s child, but will play a major role in the later war. Like the inhabitants of the Tenth World. For decades, in the vision of Lee and Kirby, there were nine of these worlds – Aaron introduced the tenth. The album Original Sin: Thor i Loki – The Tenth World tells about it . But first, Aaron wrote the four-volume series Thor Gromowładny , which begins with the album The Godkiller , which is largely the basis of this year’s feature film. Then, after the above-mentioned album “Original Sin”, the two-volume series Thor (Thunderbolt and Who wields the hammer? ), telling about the first adventures of the new Thor. Then you should check out Secret Wars: Thors , which is a side miniseries of the great Secret Wars event , but focuses on the characters of many Thor and, as it turned out over time, contains some key elements for later settlements in the war.
The next five-volume series, Mighty Thor , is already the beginning of the war, when Malekith takes over new worlds and plans to take power with the support of a sinister coalition. The whole is complemented by a single album Niegodny Thor , focusing on the further fate of the earlier Thor. And finally the newest (still coming) series Thor , which is already a prelude to the war events.
The War of the Worlds itself tells the story of Malekith’s attack on Midgard, the Earth defended by both our superheroes and positive heroes from other worlds alive.
