Vampires and werewolves – review of the book “Everything stays in the family”

As the title suggests, expect touching meetings, establishing hierarchies and… like Dora Wilk – kicking ass “scrap”. But fear not, there will also be a family dinner!

Take your bathing suits – this time we will stay with Dora in the Triple Alliance for a longer time. On the other hand, don’t inflate too many toys, as more lame ducklings will have to be dealt with first. This time, age-old, noble, very elegant vampires are promoted to this category. The wolf pack will also need some cleaning up. Time to roll up your sleeves and start figuring out how to save the world once again.

Time to go home

Dora Wilk has already faced angels, demons and gods. This time the clash will be much more intimate. You know how it is – when you save the planet, sometimes some bastards will make you a doormat. Worse, they will spoil relatives and friends. This is what happens to a red-haired witch. Someone is killing vampires. Perhaps this is a problem between bloodsuckers, but so what – we do not live in the Middle Ages to settle everything with final methods. After all, there is the office of the Governor, and her guest appearances may contribute to the popularization of civilized methods of negotiating who likes whom less.

Things start to stink a lot closer to Dora herself as well – someone in her pack of wolves dislikes her very much. The witch will be beaten up by the bone, and the others will also backfire. Until now, she had thought being an honorable alpha was about leaving the wolves to their own affairs and just not disturbing them. Now he will see that it is not so easy. With great power comes great responsibility … or maybe the other way around? After all, a family, also a patchwork one, is primarily closeness, not only duties.

This is not an episode for lovers

So far, Jadowska has accustomed us to the fact that one of the important themes of the hexalogy is Dora’s relationship with Miron and Josua. Now we are at the stage of a regular romance between the witch and the devil, so one might expect that at least there would be peace here. Unfortunately. And it disappointed me a lot. Mainly because without this element the book loses a lot of being “consolation food” for the head. It got really dark, difficult, dramatic … Somehow the series suddenly reached adulthood for which I was not prepared.

This time you won’t find too many pop culture flavors – it will be about vampire fashion, but without serials. The mood will become rather Scandinavian-criminal, considerations about the family will be serious – this is undoubtedly the influence of wolves, which have absolutely nothing to do with Twilight . There is no need to insist that Dora should be Bella here and have something to choose from. She’s a serious girl, she takes it all and then somehow gets along. Well, who would give up the wolves? Or vampires?

With an emphasis on everything

If anyone has doubted whether the hexalogue contains a hidden message of diversity, now will be sure. It’s a radically accepting character, this Dora. One must not bite, beat the weaker, murder in the name of the authorities – but within the framework of civilized relations, everything should stay. In family or among friends. And if it could be organized relatively democratically, it’s a fairy tale at all. Perhaps the biggest advantage of the fourth volume of the series is the possibility of entering deeper into the vampire and wolf community. The lives of these magical beings are governed by many dictates, prohibitions, and lesser rules. Not all of them can be done, and it’s not always worth it. And although Dora is hampered by strictly defined frames, she will do her best to make her place among them as comfortably as possible.

This is not my favorite hexalogue volume – a bit too much going on, the tone is very serious, one of the characters acts like an idiot but his behavior is not overworked. Maybe in the next volume … On the other hand, Everything stays in the family has the character of a summary, a sort of borderline book, because most of the threads in the previous ones are nicely closed here. And we get an elegant message under the slogan “let’s all make love”.

Nasza ocena: 8.2/10

Everything stays in the family takes on a more serious tone than the previous parts of the hexalogy. There is a lot of action and some serious talks here, plus a clear praise for the variety.
