Vacancy in the Smurfs Village – review of the comic book “Mama Smurfette”

The fairy-tale race of blue creatures has been functioning in culture since 1963. The originator of the series was Pierre “Peyo” Culliford (1928-1992), and after his death, the work on comics is continued by scriptwriters and cartoonists cooperating with the son of the Belgian artist, Thierry Culliford. Volume 28 – Mama Smurfette – filled with drawings by Pascal Garray, colors – Nine Culliford, while the duo Alain Jost and Thierry Culliford are responsible for the script. The booklet contains one story entitled Smurfette mom .

One in a million

Smurfette is undoubtedly the most beautiful representative of the Smurf land. She has perfectly styled golden hair and long eyelashes, but she always wears a white dress and white high heels. She also stands out from other Smurfs with her impeccable character, and although she has no other functions in the Smurfs Village apart from the ability to breed plants, it is difficult to imagine the Peyo series without this heroine. Interestingly, initially Smurfette, created by Gargamel (I give you a recipe: magic, blue clay + stone instead of a heart + crocodile tears + a few other, less important ingredients), looked completely different – she had jet-black hair and wore a simple white dress and a hat including same color. At that time, the evil and wicked girl had a goal – to trap the good Smurfs.

Just like the others

In the Smurf Village, everyone has their responsibilities. Smurfette is responsible for minor activities, such as growing plants, washing, ironing and … the occasional baking of cookies (well, maybe a little sexism …). Other inhabitants of the Smurfs Village protect the heroine from the evil lurking at every turn, do not let her overexert herself and try at all costs to make the blonde-haired girl more pleasant every day. In the heroine, however, the need to fulfill herself also comes alive in another way – she does not want to be treated as a delicate doll, but a full-fledged Smurf. Papa Smurf comes up with a brilliant idea that is to contribute to better communication in the Smurf Village, and give Smurfette the opportunity to prove that she can be trusted. Other residents are to learn that the heroine does not need to be constantly protected.

Women’s intuition prevails!

We could call the female-male relations in the Smurf Village complicated. Smurfette stands out from other heroes with her sensitivity and care. Her efforts may be appreciated, but can you imagine Mum and Papa Smurfs standing at the head of a merry group? Me neither; and maybe it’s better that way. The story told in the reviewed volume draws the reader in, and the graphics captivate. Garray portrayed the comic book characters in detail, portraying various emotions on their faces. Mama Smurfette is one of those notebooks that are really worth recommending to everyone!
