Unknown heroine – review of the comic book “Mockingbird”

The character behind the name Mockingbird has already warmed up a place in the world of comics and has been present in it for almost 50 years. She was an agent of SHIELD and a squad member of various incarnations of the Avengers. In the Marvel Now series, it gave way to other heroes. She had made guest appearances with more famous members of the Avengers and seemed to be more of a side character. The change came on the day Chelsea Cain took on the character with the release of the eight-volume series in which she plays first fiddle. She is accompanied by our native cartoonist Katarzyna Niemczyk, who has already published many comic books. As a curiosity, I can also mention her participation in the creation of the game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , for which she created illustrations.

Different stories

The stories presented in Notebooks 1 – 4 and 5 – 8 differ significantly in terms of climate. In the first four, Bobbi becomes like the subject of SHIELD’s experiments. She is regularly summoned by scientists, even at the most inappropriate times. It does not matter if it has just gone shopping or is in the middle of an important action. The goal of all this research is to discover how she is affected by the infinity formula that previously kept Nick Fury alive and the Super Soldier Serum used to create Captain America. In later notebooks, Mockingbird is invited on a cosplayer cruise, and the person who sponsors her trip has information that could acquit her ex-husband, Hawkeye. This portion of the story quickly and effectively begins to detach itself from reality, which causes incredible things to happen.New Avengers from 2010, about the heroes’ revenge against the HAMMER organization.

Extremely fun

I don’t remember the last time I read any comic that made me laugh so much. Bobbi throws fun tests at practically every step. She is also the narrator of the story, so we can experience even more humor. In addition, we are dealing with themes characteristic of superhero stories, and even a spy and criminal plot. Katarzyna Niemczyk’s drawings may not stand out from the crowd, but her cartoon style fits perfectly with the events presented in the frames. The boards are unconventional and look really good.

Summary

Mockingbird turned out to be a very positive surprise. I did not expect to get such a captivating and, above all, hilarious story. It is a pity that we will not see its direct continuation, because it is an event project . If you are looking for a slight detachment from the more popular superheroes, and by the way meet the heroine, which is usually quite quiet, I highly recommend it.
