Little Gods is the first volume of a series about characters taken alive from Greek mythology. Does combining humor with myths make sense?
Pissed off Zeus
Little Gods is a comic book that draws its full handfuls from Greek mythology. We know the main characters well for their myths. Perhaps most amazingly, the protagonist is Taurusek, the Minotaur. Apart from him in the volume Scratching boltthere will appear sickly Atlas or Heracles, who only connects his clothes with the legendary hero of myths. On the other hand, the most important representative of the fair sex is, of course, Aphrodite. Since we have already looked at the characters, it is worth saying a few words about the plot, or rather the lack of it. Theoretically, a short introduction tells us that our main little gods will want to know their powers in order to gain recognition in the eyes of Zeus, but in practice these are short one-page stories. The main plot outlined at the beginning is rarely seen in them, but more often they are just gags based on myths. And so the authors make fun of, for example, Sisyphus, and specifically take advantage of the fact that everything is falling out of his hands. Unfortunately, sometimes I had the impression that this reference to myths is quite shallow and not funny. Some more interesting stories happened, though.
Sweet Cerberus
I will not hide that I had slightly higher expectations. It seems to me that the short form didn’t work out in Little Gods . In this respect, this volume is very far from the brilliant Garfield . Jim Davis is able to put a lot of funny content in one bar, and Christophe Cazenove did not come across this play unfortunately. However, Little Gods also have several advantages. Exaggerated, funny heroes do well. Zeus or angry Poseidon look great. And this Cerberus is the sweetest beast I’ve ever seen. Philippe Larbier undoubtedly has talent. The graphic layer looks really great. Some character designs are capable of bringing a smile to your face. The cartoonist also skillfully captures the emotions tormented by the characters.
Is it worth getting to know the little gods?
I have mixed feelings about the Little Gods . This series does not live up to the heels of many of the other brilliant titles that Egmont releases – Asterix , The Adventures of the Grand Vizier Iznogud, Garfield. Fat cat’s three-pack. Unfortunately, while reading all three of these items, I had a lot more fun. On the other hand, I have a great weakness for Greek mythology and this is one of the main advantages of this collection. In addition, the characters drawn by Philippe Larbier are funny and sometimes even touching (Cerberus). If I reach for the next volume, it is only to see how other heroes and mythological creatures will present themselves, because I’m afraid that the story will probably not draw me into this interesting world.
