One-of-a-kind archaeologist…

Everyone has heard of Indiana Jones and his adventures full of traps. Created by director Steven Spielberg and screenwriter George Lucas and masterfully portrayed by American actor Harrison Ford, this fictional archaeologist combines a sense of adventure with a genuine love of knowledge. Jones respects other cultures, and at the same time willingly steals their valuable artifacts … His adventures are filled with dangers, hidden traps, secret cults and, above all, puzzles. Jones is an intelligent and combat-skilled hero, and his attributes – sun hat, leather jacket, fedora, revolver and whip – have become part and parcel of the one-of-a-kind archaeologist.

A blockbuster movie series

For the first time, viewers had the opportunity to meet the unique character of Indiana Jones in 1981, during the premiere of the film Raiders of the Lost Ark , in which she searches for the biblical Ark of the Covenant with extraordinary power. The entire series consists of four films. In Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), his goal is to find the sacred stone of the shrines in India. In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), he races against the Nazis in search of the Holy Grail. In the fourth film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), the protagonist is credited with discovering an ancient kingdom in South America associated with mysterious crystal skulls.

Fans of this iconic character are eagerly awaiting June 30 this year, when the fifth part of the series will be released under the name of Indiana Jones and the Artifact of Destiny, this time directed by James Mangold, but still with the irreplaceable (and aged!) Harrison Ford.

The adventures of an archaeologist with history in the background

We consider Indiana Jones movies to be of the adventure type, but what made them so successful is the rather free use of popular culture motifs related to ancient artifacts and civilizations. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have always been willing to sacrifice historical accuracy for the sake of fanciful plot, in line with poetic licentia , but they have also always made sure that all archaeologist’s adventures are close to real scientific knowledge. In his book, Adam Węgłowski explains what historical facts allowed the creators to create this iconic film series, what actually happened from the script, and what turned out to be a figment of their imagination.
