TOP 5: Board games for two – editorial list of the most interesting proposals

Although we suspect that each of us would like the current epidemiological situation to last as short as possible, it will not be a matter of days, or maybe weeks … Therefore, we propose games for two people, thanks to which we will feel the passage of time a bit differently!

Star Realms

Star Realms is a great two-person title in which players can face each other and wreak havoc with the help of a galactic fleet. There is no pity here, building up a deck of killer units to crush your opponent on the next turn counts. The possibilities are huge, and creating combos warms the heart up. Add to this the bases capable of protecting us against enemy attacks and it will turn out that just over a hundred cards will be enough for many hours of unique gameplay. – Hubert Heller

Mr Jack

Probably everyone has heard about Sherlock Holmes, and certainly not one of them watched his deductive abilities with envy and admiration. But what if we get the chance to play the role of a detective ourselves? This is guaranteed by a great game for two – “Mr. Jack”.

The contents of the box may seem modest at first glance, but it is precisely this simplicity that makes it strong. We get a board, a few small components, and – most importantly – eight characters that we can move freely and use their special skills to introduce both in the game and in our opponent’s head. The manual is also not long or complicated, so it takes a little time and before we look back, we already sit down to the first game.

During the game, one of the players takes on the role of a detective who has to track down the criminal, and the other plays the role of Jack the Ripper, whose goal is to escape the city safely. Sounds easy? And it is not like that! Although the rules are very simple and it takes a moment to set up the game, you really need to focus and strain your mind to play each move as well as possible. Moreover, we are not able to plan two rounds in a row, so we have to be smart and think fast to cleverly outplay our opponent, which makes this game even more interesting. Or maybe it is Sherlock that turns out to be our wanted one? – Patrycja Steczyszyn

Kingdomino Duel

Many games can be played by two people, but there are also games that are only intended for a pair of players. One of them is Kingdomino Duel , a title recently released by Fox Games. This is another proposal from the well-known Kingdomino series , but this time the authors focused on the recently popular roll & write category.

During the game, our task is to fill the sheet with symbols. It will be our kingdom and it is up to us how well it will score at the end of the game. Mechanically it is a very simple game – roll the dice, make a “tile” into a domino and redraw symbols onto a piece of paper. The whole fun is about choosing the right walls. The better dice we choose for the kingdom, the less spells we get. They are not necessary to win, but useful, and finding the right balance is the key.

There is no question that the game is suitable for two players – it is literally made for them. Is it better than its bigger colleagues in the series? It is an individual matter. It is definitely fast, nicely made and has a very practical magnetic clasp, which makes it easy to carry. Recently, I haven’t had much time for a few hours’ games and I usually play in two, which is why these types of games work very well for me, and Kingdomino Duel has joined them. – Katarzyna Satława

Civilization

First of all: on the scale of Civilization, even a few months is just a comma against the background of the entire history of human history. Secondly: the gameplay itself is so extensive that it can take up to a half a day!

The player faces a fantastic challenge to build his civilization from scratch! We take our first steps in antiquity, choose historical leaders and plan strategies for the next centuries, up to the present day. Are we closer to democracy, monarchy, or maybe theocracy? Each game is a new beginning and we can make completely different decisions, including political, civil and military actions.

Civilization is certainly one of the more complicated games – we have to think carefully about science points, multiply culture points, and wisely dispose of food and raw materials. In addition, our teammate can build his foot soldiers and knights, which he will eventually bring against us … It is a very good position for two people, thanks to which they can closely observe each other and not wait long for the next turn. – Paulina Czajka

Res Arcana

Mages duel with swords, spells and dragons.

What if you could find out who would be a better mage? Who better to use the power of enchanted places and artifacts? Who will get the most magic essence? Who will build powerful monuments? Who will subdue the dragons and defeat their opponents? Who will amass 10 victory points first? Wait a minute, what ?!

Res Arcana is a card game set in the fantasy world, in which we direct the actions of magicians. We collect magical essence enchanted in colorful pieces of wood, play artifacts printed on cards and take control of cardboard enclaves of power. And all of this magically complements, permeates and creates alchemical combos.

We start the game with eight cards in the deck and … we won’t get new ones. We need to figure out how to use them to take over power enclaves and monuments to score points. Other players are not idle and disturb us not only by taking the chosen cards, but also directly – e.g. by discarding our resources. The two most enjoyable aspects of Res Arcana are constantly figuring out what to do and interacting with other players.

The game works very well for two people. While in a larger group it is a little easier to get chaos and unexpected win, here we have a duel. Action for action, card for card, monument for four gold and I win. Damn it. Revenge?

After getting used to the rules, we will play one game in 20-40 minutes filled with making our own plans and blowing up someone else’s plans. The number of cards and possibilities is enough for many games, and we will still be surprised: “how? what does this card do? what can you do now? it’s totally over the top! ”. To then answer with an even stronger combo. – Jarek Wójcicki
