“I do not like this fantasy” – probably heard many of you. Meanwhile, many people do not even realize that they are currently watching a movie that falls perfectly into the fantasy category . Here are our top 10 non-obvious fantasy movies! And a little bonus.
Death will come today
After this prophetic title, you can expect another typical slasher and with lots of diagrams and boring plot Twists . However, director Christopher Landon breathed more life into his project, making Tree one of the most eccentric final girls of the 21st century. An efficiently realized image of a talented artist is a real journey in time, in which – as it turns out – a seemingly innocent scientific experiment diametrically changes the fate of our heroes, forced to choose between different values. The story, without much imagination, turns into an interesting story about alternative realities, difficult life choices and, for a good slasherbefitting convention, containment and discovery of the murderer’s identity. – Marcin Panuś

Koniara
The film, directed by Jeff Baena, with Alison Brie in the title role, seems to be the story of a shy girl whose life is occupied only by horses, haberdashery work and a beloved series somewhat reminiscent of a cross between Lucifer and Castle. Sarah is an outsider, she has difficulty making new friends, and her family history casts a shadow over her life. When she starts having strange dreams, waking up in strange places and hearing voices in an empty apartment, we think she may be losing her mind. However, she herself has other suspicions – starting with alien abduction and ending with cloning. The atmosphere of the film and Brie, great in her role, make the viewer at times just as confused as the main character. Because maybe Sarah is actually a clone of her own grandmother? Maybe her dreams are real? Or maybe someday the mother ship will come for her to be taken on board again?

Death will come tomorrow
Oh my! I know the James Bond movies were full of themes and ideas from outer space, but the twentieth installment of this series definitely wins when it comes to impossible ideas for taking over the world. Where to start? Bond drives an invisible car, and the main villain uses a state-of-the-art satellite like a laser and threatens to sunray a hole on the Earth’s surface and unleash a nuclear war. The real icing on the cake is highly invasive genetic therapy, which allows a North Korean colonel to change his appearance and reveal himself to the world as a passionate, red-haired billionaire that no one has heard of before. It sounds like absurd pulp science fiction, truth? Even Roger Moore, the first Bond in space, believed that the creators were overplaying with fantasy and effects. I always have a great time in this movie! I find it suitable for a laid-back movie night with friends, a beer, and a discussion of just how crazy what we’re watching right now. – Karolina Małas

Time for love
We associate Richard Curtis primarily as the director and screenwriter of the hit romantic comedies: This Is Love, Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral , which are regularly hosted on the evening channels of public television. Much less often it is mentioned that this creator also has a production on the border of fantasy. I’m talking about the movie Time for Lovefrom 2013. The biggest advantage of the picture is an extraordinary idea for a plot. The main character, a bit clumsy Tim, has problems with establishing interpersonal relationships. The situation is changed, however, by the discovery of family “power”, allowing men to travel back in time after… entering the wardrobe. New skills open up new opportunities for Tim, but any change in the past has an impact on future events as well. Thanks to this, it manages to maintain a reasonable balance between warm comedy and drama, making the film an interesting proposition for a weekend evening. – Krzysztof Olszamowski

K-Pax
K-Pax is one of those films that stimulate thought and discussion. With each subsequent minute, they strengthen our uncertainty, and their open endings allow for your own interpretation of the film story. One of the patients of the mental hospital (Kevin Spacey) believes that he is an alien and is coming from a distant planet for research purposes. One of the doctors is trying to solve his mystery. With each subsequent meeting with the main character, he begins to have serious doubts about his true identity.
The painting by Iain Softley is a beautiful, fantastically played, and above all extremely brilliant, magical and emotional production that will remain in our memory for a long time. – Mateusz Michałek

A toddler in trouble
Three kidnappers decide to kidnap the child of a wealthy industrialist. Under the pretext of photographing the boy, they appear at his parents’ house. The action is successful, but the clever two-year-old, using the first opportunity, escapes the kidnappers and discovers the secrets and temptations of the big city that were previously unavailable to him.
The question is, where is the fantasy hiding in this family adventure film? It is about the title toddler named Bennington, who in the real world would not have a better chance of walking along a busy metropolis street or using a crane to climb to the highest floors of a skyscraper construction site. Even the gorilla cage scene seems real, as we have witnessed many times the ape-human bond of friendship. Let’s think, would we (without fear) let a child into a cage with a powerful, wild animal ourselves? When it comes to toddler manual skills, I am full of admiration. He easily uses objects reserved at least for preschoolers, and the scene with one of the kidnappers being set on fire with a lighter is a comedic masterpiece. Where else is the fantasy hiding? Let’s see we have three adult guys who cleverly abducted an infant. How can they not control a vulnerable child? Pure fantasy.
The film Brzdąc w opałach was released in theaters in 1994. Film academies rated him very low. In my opinion, it was too harsh a sentence, because today he has many fans, including me. – Kamil Sawicki

Indiana Jones
Obviously – George Lucas encouraged millions of young people to become engineers after watching Star Wars. What else has he done? He certainly also supported the cadre of historians with the Indiana Jones series of films. The adventures of the most famous American archaeologist is not only a history lesson, but also an incentive for an academic career and learning foreign languages. First of all, it is a fantasy based on the oldest myths and beliefs. We have recently interpreted stories about the Ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail and crystal skulls, as well as a variation on Indian sects, where fantasy factors are an important element of the plot narrative. – Bartosz Stuła

What women want
Mel Gibson is mostly seen by viewers as the hard cop from Lethal Weapon or the title Mad Max. This American actor, however, has many other titles to his credit, including What Women Want . The picture was a huge box office success and gained a huge crowd of fans. It is referred to as a romantic comedy. But have you ever thought of him as a fantasy? The main character first gets electrocuted and manages to survive, then hears the thoughts of the women! If he had ended up in the Marvel universe, Nick Marshall would probably be part of the X-Men group.

Hibernate
Decades ago, it fell into the icy waters of the ocean. He was presumed dead, but the low temperature meant that he was only hibernating. It remained in a block of ice for a long time. He was found, fished out and brought back to life. Here is Paul Fournier! What? Did you think we were talking about Stevie Rogers or Captain America? None of these things. I gave you the main outline of the history of the French film Hibernatus , starring Louis de Funes. You must have seen the picture, as well as your parents, and even grandparents. And usually everyone assumes that they are dealing with comedy. Absolutely, we have a large dose of humor here. But a man frostbitten after many years? This is pure fantasy!

believe in ghost
A man returning from beyond the grave who wants to save his beloved. On the way, he meets other ghosts remaining on Earth. His only contact with the living is the medium that hears him as the only one. He manages to achieve his goal and kill the man who killed himself and who wanted his woman’s life. He is dragged by demons to hell, and our hero can finally go to the afterlife in peace. Sounds fantastic? Of course! Meanwhile, hardly anyone thinks of ” Believe in the Ghost” as a fantasy. The film with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg in the lead roles is more often seen as a melodrama with a romantic theme. And your parents must have seen him more than once. When they say they don’t like fantasy again, ask immediately why they are watching this Hollywood classic again. –Piotr Markiewicz

Bonus – The Room
A horse with a row of those who have not yet encountered one of the most peculiar works of world cinematography. The Room by Tommy Wiseau is a cult film, but not necessarily in a good sense. Inconsistent plot, absurd cause-effect relationships, practically non-existent psychological sphere of the characters and acting that would probably give Stanisławski a headache. It’s a mix that screams “a movie so bad it’s good.” Possibly just “bad”.
But what if there’s a reason why Johnny and his surroundings look just the way they are? What if … we are not watching a very badly made melodrama, but very cleverly disguised sci-fi? The screening takes on a completely different overtone when we notice that we are dealing here with visitors from another dimension / planet who try to imitate the behavior of the inhabitants of the Earth and later infiltrate their place of residence. This explains not only inadequate reactions and at least strange behavior, but also all framed photos of spoons … – Joanna Biernacik
