Today we celebrate Tony Shalhib’s birthday

Born in the US on October 9, 1953, the Lebanese actor, screenwriter and producer is best known for his signature roles such as “Detective Monk”. But he also played, among others in “Men in Black”, he voiced the character of Splinter in two installments of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”.

In many movies, he was the star of the background (with or without a mustache, but always recognizable). However, he started out with the theater. He   won a Tony Award for his performance in The Band’s Visit . Several Emmy Awards for his roles in the TV series Detective Monk  and The Magnificent Mrs. Maisel . But we are here to look at his contribution to the world of fantasy.

He has spoken in  Fallout as well as in the ninja turtle warrior movies. He has been in guest appearances  in the X-Files.  He has appeared in the paintings: The Addams Family 2 , Men in Black I and II , Gattaca – Future Shock , Life Less Ordinary , Paulie – Talking Bird , The Little Agents trilogy , Thirteen Ghosts, Impostor: Test for Humanity, 1408  based on a story by Stephen King.

These were not the main or great roles, but the characteristic hair and charming smile were remembered by viewers.

Since 1992, he has been married to actress Brooke Adams (who also starred in several sci-fi movies, eg Dead Zone, Invasion of the Body Hunters ). They are raising two daughters, one adopted and the other biological.

Here’s what he says about himself:

I starred in my first play when I was 6 years old. My older sister took part in the high school production of “Król i ja”. They needed kids for the scene, so she brought me. I had a costume and some serious issues that made me laugh. I loved that feeling.

Of course, I try to create other characters that are different from Monk, because I want to be remembered for more than that.

I think there are still many great movies ahead of him. It would be great for fantasy roles, don’t you think?
