On January 22, 1953, Jim Jarmusch was born, the middle child of European immigrants. As he recalls, his life and work were greatly influenced by B-class films he watched in his childhood, and the counterculture in the form of music and books stolen from his older siblings.
Initially, he wanted to become a writer. He even began training in this field at Columbia University. However, in the last year of American literature, he went to Paris for an international exchange. It was there that he got acquainted with the works of New Wave directors. Upon his return to the United States, his writing changed from abstract to visually descriptive.
Jarmusch’s first film was his project at the New York Art College, the psychological drama, The Perpetual Vacation (1980). Another production, Stranger Than Paradise (1984), brought the director a wider recognition . Awarded in Cannes and by the NSFC, she broke many Hollywood rules of filmmaking and became one of the determinants of independent cinema. Jarmusch did not break with this convention in his subsequent works, telling, for example, the story of three prisoners escaping from New Orleans arrest in Out of Law (1986), putting together five episodes about the events of five taxis in five big cities in one film ( Night on Earthin 1991) or depicting vampires as (mostly) highly educated and intelligent creatures as opposed to humans poisoning their own world in Only Lovers Will Survive (2013).
In addition to films, Jim Jarmusch also makes music videos. He once played the keyboard and sang in the band The Del-Byzanteens. In 2011, he recorded the album Concerning the Entrance into Eternity with Jozef van Wissem . A year later, their second album, The Mystery of Heaven , was released , recorded with Tilda Swinton.
