In “Star Diaries”, Stanisław Lem speaks about man and shows his place in the universe through stories about the inhabitants of other planets, star journeys, the development of science and technology. These are timeless and universal truths and considerations about contemporary society. Lem does not glorify humanity, but show it as it really is – with all its flaws and limitations, and often these are very pessimistic visions.
Ijon Tichy – captain of galactic shipping, traveler, explorer, extraordinarily talented and extremely stubborn, individualist, rationalist, skeptic and unbeliever. Tolerant, open and curious of the Universe, the attractions of which he often learns at the risk of his own health and life. This time he has a chance to travel back in time and become the head of the Program: “TEOHIPHIP, or Telechronic Optimization of Common History with Hyperputerem”, which will deal with improving the past. Will the future of 2661 prove to be idyllic for him, or will he have to deal with more present problems? Will he be able to accomplish great deeds, overcome the chaos associated with the manipulation of time and lead humanity into a new, better future? These are the questions that this funny, brilliant and thought-provoking performance will answer.
The performance was created as part of the Gdynia Breakwater of Culture, i.e. the city’s aid program for the cultural sector.
PERFORMANCE PRESENTED FREE OF CHARGE AND ONLINE!
More about the project:
Lem in four ways!
For many of us, the effect of home quarantine caused by the coronovirus pandemic is exhaustingly repetitive everyday life. That is why the newest theater proposition of Gdynia Główna Theater will be extremely unusual, as we will present time travel, fascinating dilemmas of cyborgization, hallucinogenic visions tangled with reality and feelings that, contrary to the program, appear in the robot’s mind.
Our theatrical initiative is four performative readings of Stanisław Lem’s texts – “Czy pan Johns? ” (prepared and directed by: Marzena Chojnowska), “Futurological Congress” (adapted and directed by: Ida Bocian), “Maska” (adapted and directed by: Ewa Ignaczak) and “TEOHIPHIP, or Telechronic Optimization of Universal History with Hyperputerem” (based on the short story “A Journey twenty “, adapted and directed by Grzegorz Kujawiński).
Why is Lem? Because the prose of this writer, philosopher and futurologist is perfectly theatrical transcription and is characterized by excellent language, ambiguous humor and a solid dose of grotesque. The texts we have selected also pose extremely accurate questions about the shape of future social relations, which is a current topic in a time of social isolation and expectations for the return of the longed-for “normality”.
All our performative readings will be made available for free on Youtube. The performances are created as part of Gdynia’s Breakwater of Culture, i.e. the city’s aid program for the cultural sector.
