To Lumia’s rescue – review of the game “Seed of Life”

Seed of Life is the debut adventure game by the Spanish studio MadLight, released on August 11, 2021. It is a complete genre mishmash, as the arcade-platform elements are intertwined with puzzles. The production collects rather positive opinions on the Steam platform, but there are opinions that it is a total crap. Which of these voices are right and is Seed of Life a game worthy of attention?

The invasion of aliens and saving the world, which is the same again

The game has a fairly banal storyline and for most players it won’t be very interesting. We direct the actions of Cora, one of the few survivors after the attack of an alien civilization on the planet Lumia. The aliens want lumium – the life-giving energy without which this land will be destroyed. We get to know the protagonist when life practically ceases to exist. The wonder substance is running out and soon the sun will go out as well. The heroine decides to take matters into her own hands and find an energy source that will revive the planet. During his journey, he finds a gadget of an alien civilization, thanks to which he gains new skills.

A fantastic and (not necessarily) friendly world

Immediately after turning on the game, the fantastic cartoon graphics catch your eye. Seed of Lifewas created on the Unity engine, which once again shows that in the hands of a good developer it can work wonders. The production pleases the eyes and I found myself admiring the views while standing on a high rock ledge. The characters are also very nice and well animated, during the game I did not come across a single bug or glitch resulting from the way the heroine is animated. Unfortunately, the visual sphere is the strongest point of the game, and most of the other elements of this production are fine at best. Even though the area is really beautiful, exploring is not so much fun. You can often bump into invisible walls, and during my adventure I also came across a few places with no textures. Moving Cora is therefore very difficult. Countless times I’ve been nervous when my character did not want to jump over a small stone or could not enter a slightly higher ground. A couple of times I was also able to stand in the middle of a practically vertical wall, because a very small piece of earth was sticking out of it. Even though the game world is visually and artistically delightful, it does not necessarily allow you to enjoy it due to its weak technical side.

So where should I go ?

The production certainly has a few drawbacks, but I decided to devote a whole paragraph to the biggest one. It is about navigating the game world, as well as hints for players in case of stalling. Seed of Life is a corridor game most of the time and then the problem does not make itself felt, but there are also some stages with semi-open terrain. I stopped at the first one for a long time and had no idea what exactly I had to do to move on. For several dozen minutes, I circled from rock to rock, looking for my current target. Theoretically, a small arrow is displayed on the back of the heroine with the direction in which the player should go, but this is a very flawed system. There were times he was pointing in the wrong direction, and I spent the next minutes looking for the entrance. The game does not have any markers for where to go (which I completely don’t understand as Cora has a vision skill which uses light poles to indicate switches and plants containing lumium). Were it not for these moments of total wandering, my impressions ofSeed of Life would be much more positive.

A mishmash of genres and mechanics

The production cannot be accused of being monotonous. Virtually until the end of the adventure, the creators provide us with new elements. In this aspect, the authors also did extremely well, because the game is not boring and surprises with new mechanics. Learning new skills, puzzles with circle elements, escaping from falling boulders, jumping over stones over a river of lava – each of these mechanics is served in such a way as to be a pleasant springboard from exploring the world and collecting life-giving substances. Some of them, such as falling boulders or a river of lava, appear only once in the entire game, which is also a huge plus. This shows that the creators really put a lot of heart into this project and made every effort to ensure that the player encounters something new every now and then.

After completing the game, I had mixed feelings. I appreciated the authors for the ideas and solutions introduced in the game, but I could not forgive a few huge errors (mainly the lack of textures) and average playability. The more time passes after I finish the game and say goodbye to Cora, the warmer feelings evoke thoughts of Seed of Life . Of course, this is not a must-have title for everyone, but fans of adventure games will not regret checking out this production. People who have a limited amount of time may also consider buying, as the title can be completed in 3-4 hours.
