To be Deadpool or not to be… – review of the comic book “Deadpool. Deadpool flies with Shakespeare ”volume 7.

Ian Doescher did the impossible, namely, he threw Deadpool in Shakespeare’s tragedy. Is it possible to mix tradition with the incorrect character of the most famous mercenary?

Shakespeare vs. Deadpool

Deadpool. A mercenary that cannot be killed. He regenerates instantly, and thus even cutting off a limb is not a problem for him. And here’s what weird happened? The mercenary with a winder found its way to the works of Shakespeare. A strange, unreal, twisted idea, but at the same time original. After all, such a bully may feel at home, because there is quite a lot of violence in the works of the English playwright. For example, such a Macbeth stained his hands with the blood of the king himself. the comic book features characters not only from this drama, as the screenwriter Ian Doescher contaminated several works by Shakespeare – here you can also find references to, among others , Hamlet , Romeo and Juliet , The Tempest .

Apart from this episode, we will find two more stories in the notebook: one is about Valentine’s Day in the style of Deadpool, and the other is about his cooperation with Captain America during the clash with his copies from an alternate reality.

A mercenary with a coil

What is Deadpool like? Well, if someone watched movies, he knows exactly what to expect. This mercenary talks a lot, willingly uses force solutions that result in bloodshed, and he constantly destroys the fourth wall. However, when someone cuts off any part of his body, it turns into a gag. It is similar in this comic book, although one can notice a fundamental difference, because (as William Shakespeare himself warns at the very beginning) Deadpool in this world uses an iambic pentameter, and instead of a pistol he has a crossbow. To this let’s add the famous pose known from Hamlet performed by Deadpool. That’s a great deal. However, this does not change the fact that there are times when its winding loses some of its character.

Hamlet’s pose

The cover is cute in its own way and encourages you to reach for this book. Overall, the visuals keep the level; Deadpool looks great especially with the old fashioned outfit she’s wearing in Shakespeare’s plays. Despite this, the style is not impressive, because the backgrounds have not been refined, and the characters in the background are often slightly blurred.

… that is the question!

The idea of placing a mercenary with a reel in Shakespeare’s plays is undoubtedly original. However, the performance itself is no longer as spectacular as it could be. There were some interesting themes, but I expected a story to come out that would blow me off my feet with Deadpool’s inadequate humor and skilful reference to Shakespeare’s dramas. Meanwhile, I have a sense of unused potential – this contamination of the masterpieces of the English playwright came out extremely chaotic. Nevertheless, I appreciate the idea and Deadpool is playing Shakespearein my opinion it is an interesting game with tradition. As for the other episodes, they are pleasant to read, with a lot of humor, but they are overshadowed by the title story. It is for this story that it is worth delving into this volume. The main character can still amuse himself, so I was pleased to delve into his next adventures. I remember especially a scene taken from Hamlet … and for such moments it is worth reading comics.

Deadpool in Shakespeare's dramas? Why not! A crazy adventure full of inappropriate humor, violence and some really strange ideas.
