At the outset, let’s emphasize that Here’s Coming … Daredevil is not a story taken out of context, going beyond the canon, or starting the story of Matt Murdock from the very beginning. It is a continuation of what he created Ed Brubaker created, only in a slightly different version. The main character has recently freed himself from the influence of a certain demon and the Palm organization, he made a journey into himself and now he returns with a “new self”. He is definitely more cheerful and laid back. However, he still upholds law and order both as a masked hero and as a blind lawyer. The album itself is a collection of several stories in which Daredevil fights Mole Man, the Pyromaniac, collaborates with Spider-Man and the Black Cat, and even goes on a trip with a group of disabled kids. The leitmotif and linking of the individual stories is a mysterious disk that the most dangerous criminal organizations, such as AIM or Hydra, want to get hold of.
Out of the darkness
The previous writers creating the adventures of Daredevil focused on a heavy, dark atmosphere. Mark Waid decided to take a completely different approach to the subject of the Devil from Hells Kitchen. Matt is suddenly no longer a gloomy and depressed hero, and this change is good for him. Of course, I do not negate the great stories written by such masters as Brubaker, Bandis or, above all, Frank Miller, but sometimes it is worth changing something. It can be risky, but in this case it turned out to be a plus. Murdock can now not only kick a criminal’s ass and put him behind bars, but also joke and laugh. He’s not a prankster like Deadpool or Spider-Man, but his good mood is shared by others, including the reader. Besides, the author himself seems to be having a great time at work and is giving himself a little shot at the nose. The daredevil has not been himself recently and many innocent people have died as a result. For this reason, Captain America himself stands in his way, demanding justice. Daredevil explains that he was possessed by a demon, and that is quite enough. And one more thing for which the creator should be praised. He gave us a picture of how Matt Murdock sees the world. He keeps an internal narrative all the time, telling about his superhuman senses. Thanks to this, we can get to know him better and cheer him on even more.
With a fresh eye
What would a comic book script be worth without good graphics? In the first volume Here Comes… DaredevilMarcos Martin and Paolo Rivera took care of the graphics. You can see that they understood Waid’s vision and followed this path. The album is much more colorful than its predecessors, and also easier to receive. Again, I would like to point out that the style of their predecessors was great and very realistic, but would not fit the light climate of the new adventures of the Devil at all. And while I commended the author for introducing us to Matt’s senses, the cartoonists deserve a standing ovation. The fragments showing how the hero “sees” the world are a real masterpiece. I am not talking about the echo-radar itself, but above all the full-page frames where Murdock and Foggy walks, and the artists delicately marked all the signals that reach Daredevil’s ears or nostrils.
Accessories
In order to encourage the recipient to buy the album even more, Egmont added some interesting additions to it. As standard, we find here several alternative covers. There is also an introduction explaining what recently happened in Matt Murdock’s life. There are also concept sketches and a demonstration of creating frames, so that people who dream of a career as comic book cartoonists can get to know the process “from the inside”. The most interesting, however, is the interview with the author himself, Marek Waid, who talks about his love for comics, the beginnings of work, ideas, and also adds a few flavors that we could find in the comic, and which we will suddenly look at completely differently.
Time for a series?
Here it comes … Daredevil is a position much lighter in terms of plot than, for example , Daredevil. Fearless! The gloomy, detective vibe has been replaced with a more humorous story that still exudes superheroism. Pleasant to read, it will certainly go to people who are just starting their adventure with Matt Murdock, but his fans will not complain either. Perhaps this is the way the creators of the series, which is to be released on Disney +, will go. If so, we should not be afraid that it will be a title that is unsuccessful and spoils the image of the Daredevil created by Netflix. As you can see, the Devil can have many faces!
