During an interview with EW about the Season Four Finale, Joy explained that they had plans to end the story, but it just took a little more time to get to it. The fifth season has yet to be announced by HBO, but it would likely be the final season.

During the fourth season, we learn that Charlotte Hale has changed the name ” Dolores ” to “Christina”. Probably the final season will give Dolores a chance to finally be the one that dictates history.
“In the last season, we will allow a person who has been dependent on other people’s likes and desires to write their own story. [In Season Four] the old world and old regimes have been destroyed. So what will Dolores do? Will the world be different? How will she, as the ultimate host, create a whole new universe in another game? ” Joy said.
