The subcutaneous archetype
Generalizing is not a desirable form for reviews. However, I think that with a clear conscience I may be tempted to say that, in one way or another, each of us knows the story of Peter Pan and Wendy. Is it due to JM Barrie’s book, film adaptation, numerous animations (who remembers Peter Pan and the Pirates series broadcast on Fox Kids, and later Jetix, hand up!) Or psychology textbooks. Therefore, is it possible to create anything new and interesting in this matter? Well, it turns out that it is. The only problem is the language barrier, because the book by Jodi Lynn Anderson has not been published here.
Contemporary themes in five flavors
The story in Tiger Lily was introduced to the reader from Tinkerbell’s perspective. As you probably guessed, the main character here is the Tiger Lily, which automatically aroused my interest. The universe apparently decided to settle accounts with me after a very unsuccessful meeting with Jakub Ćwiek’s The Boys . However, I emphasize that Anderson did not re-introduce the same events that we could recite at any time of the day or night. In a way, the presented events are a kind of prequel, complementing Barri’s work.
Neverland and the heroes we know are just a medium here, a bit like the movie Joker . The axis of the story is growing up and the bonds that connect us with other people. Of course, it is primarily a story about growing up and first love, but it is poured with a very tasty multi-layered sauce.
First of all, the author delicately, but unambiguously and very vividly, uses the topics of social exclusion, transgender and various types of violence, which are not very popular in youth literature. However, this is not a position that will leave us deeply depressed for the next few weeks. Most of all, Tiger Lily is filled with valuable commentary about life just as it is.
Currently, there is a lot of talk in social media about self-acceptance, fighting complexes, self-awareness and sexual identity. Therefore, the adventures of the rebellious Tiger Lily are part of this extremely popular trend today, and it is worth noting that the book was published by Harper Collins in 2012.
Summary
I recommend this item to anyone whose heart was beating faster at the mere thought of the amazing adventures of Peter Pan and Lost Boys. Above all, I was delighted with the fresh perspective and the way in which the author took up both difficult and mundane topics. Tiger Lily is also about growing up, different types of love, and about survival. Do not be afraid, there will also be pirates and crocodiles!
