Gillian Anderson, known for her role as Dana Scully in The X -Files , had already had the opportunity to return to the character in 2016. Then, despite the break between the first series and the 2016 installment, Gillian became interested in her character again.
Gillian Anderson shared her thoughts on the role in an interview with Total Film :
There was a period when I couldn’t even hear about this character. I got over it. Then, I don’t know how much time had passed, whether it was a decade or less, I suddenly realized how lucky I was, not just to be successful, but to be able to play a character like Scully for so long. Not only is she an authentic and iconic heroine, but one who has influenced young women and women of all ages in so many ways.
Interestingly, David Duchovny would not be interested in reprising his role if it was a version without Gillian. In an interview about the future of The X -Files , he emphasized that he is not even thinking about such an option.
