The cast of The Witcher evokes various, often conflicting emotions among fans. Casting could really surprise, the biggest controversy of their time was caused by Anna Shaffer and Anya Chalotra as the series Triss and Yennefer. On the other hand, there is, for example, Henry Cavill, on whom most agree that he is perfect in the role of Geralt.
Another name joins the second season – Rebecca Hanssen . The actress comes from Scotland, and we can know her from such productions as Enola Holmes (2020), Confess it in a whisper (2018) or Lore (2018), she will also play a role in the upcoming Baldur’s Gate III . Hanssen portrays Meve, the White Queen, ruler of Lyria and Rivia.
In the books, Meve made Geralt a knight after the Battle of the Bridge on Yaruga, giving him the title of Geralt of Rivia (which she took from him after his escape). She is a woman with a strong personality, blessed with a sharp tongue and great beauty. In Blood of the Elves we read:
“Why,” said Meve suddenly, “are you all looking at me?”
“We marvel at your beauty,” muttered Henselt from deep inside his mug.
“That too,” agreed Vizimir. “Meve, we all know you can find a way out of any situation.” You have a female intuition, you are a wise woman …
Or:
“You can rule me out,” the Queen of Lyria smiled more gracefully. – It is true that two of my offspring are floating around the world … The fruits of a delightful oblivion … as long as they have not been hanged so far. I doubt that anyone would suddenly want to reign. They had neither the predisposition nor the inclination to do so. They were both stupider than their father, let the earth be light to him. Whoever knew my late husband knows what this means.
The casting selection has already caused some controversy as many people imagined Meve as a slightly more mature woman (after all, she has two adult sons in the books). It is known, however, that sometimes the literary canon has to yield to the requirements of the screen, in the faith of a better adaptation of certain threads.
Together with Rebecca Hanssen we will see, among others Henry Cavill (Geralt), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), Freya Allan (Ciri), Joey Batey (Dandelion), Eamon Farren (Cahir), Royce Pierreson (Istredd), Mahesh Jadu (Vilgefortz) or Lars Mikkelsen (Stregobor). The second season of The Witcher will appear on Netflix in 2021.
