The time of the Jedi has passed … – review of the seventh season of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”

The last few months may not have been the happiest due to the epidemic situation. Nevertheless, thanks to the arrival of Disney + in Western Europe (those who know me know what country I ended up in during the coronavirus turmoil), I had the opportunity to learn about the last season of the Clone Wars . Was it worth it? Yet how!

Not so scary Disney

When the word spread in 2012 that George Lucas had sold his empire, along with the Star Wars brand, to a mouse dictator, I became sad. My first question in this situation was: what about the Clone Wars emitted by Cartoon Network? What about this really cool series, which is getting more serious and dark from episode to episode? Disney is not on the way to war, let alone the dark Sith. The reality turned out to be really brutal for the next 7 years. The Mickey Mouse label gave us an unsuccessful trilogy, and a few – in my opinion – ill-considered projects (except for Rogue One , which may not allow you to feel the Force, but the experience of an armed conflict is so great that the title can easily compete withHelicopter on Fire ).

The Clone Wars didn’t quite end up in the garbage can, however. They fell into the hands of Netflix for a moment, which released something like a season that patches up story holes. However, the fans demanded more, because with Ahsoka Tano’s departure from the Jedi Order, their beloved series could not end. If The Walt Disney Company found Genndy Tartakowsky’s short episodes non-canonical, then Dave Filoni’s vision of the conflict had to be brought to an end, as the series required. So it was done.

Darkness, deception, fear, brutality – the triumph of the dark side of the Force

I grew up on prequels. What interested me strongly was the extended issue of the Jedi and their role in the galaxy, which was not too much in the original trilogy (for obvious reasons). Besides, there are many fond memories of mine with Lucas’s recent films. Watching Revenge of the Sith, I cried as the whole order collapsed due to Palpatine’s ruse, and my favorite hero, Anakin Skywalker, lost almost everything from his beloved to his mentor and great friend, Obi-Wan. John Williams’ music only intensified the emotions accompanying these scenes. Now I was crying even more, because I could see with my own eyes that Shmi’s son had lost even more. He lost his apprentice and friend in the form of Ahsoka and his most faithful comrade-in-arms – Captain Rex.

It has long been known that there was no portrayal of Anakin’s slow transition to the dark side, after all a few dialogues with the chancellor would not have done so. This is what we get in the Clone Wars , but for me, from the cinematic to the final episode of Season 7, it was more of Ahsoka’s story. And this was also the final. The initial few episodes show us one of the last major war maneuvers on Anaxes, and the final decisions of Master Skywalker before the transformation. Kenobi’s Padawan seems to be one foot in the embrace of evil, which is especially illustrated by his meeting with General Trench.

We meet Ahsoka at the point where we said goodbye to her, that is, right after we left the Jedi Order. The very idea of ending the series at this point even seemed acceptable, but watching the fifth season we don’t get that impression. Dave Filoni, however, allowed us to enter the psyche of the young Togrutanka and reveal her thoughts about the devastating war, and the Order itself (a few moments is also devoted to Rex as a representative of the voice of the clones about the conflict). We are also witnessing some ill-considered decisions. At the same time, watching everything that takes place on a small screen, accompanied by the atmosphere of catastrophic effects that will follow, gives us shivers and kills us in places. Well, this is the end of the story. Ahsoka never completed the Padawana path – maybe if it were not for this,

When everything is technically held together by the Force

In some laconic way, I tried to present the most important problems of the last season of the Star Wars series : The Clone Wars, but that’s not all. I would like to note how much the title itself has evolved. Watching the first episodes after a few years, we get the impression that the first episodes were typical animation for children. Let us add that a very cheap animation, which was a carbon copy of a good computer game (as for the last years of the first decade of the 21st century). The last season is something completely different. Computer-generated graphics are at the highest level, and the quality of the presented story, with its seriousness and drama, goes rather to a more mature viewer.

Die-hard fans may also feel a certain déjà vu. Well, some of the events taking place in the last minutes of the series are intertwined with the book by EK Johnston Ahsoka. Has Disney started having problems organizing the canon?

Finally, dubbing, because some of you watch this series only in this version. Fortunately, Disney has retained the voices of the original characters. We can hear, among others, Tomasz Bednarek, Agnieszka Kudelska, or the specific, but very ear-friendly voice of Jarosław Domino. The great absentee is Jerzy Dominik, who provided dialogues for the narrator and the clones in previous seasons. Death prevented this actor from completing his work, but his legacy was nevertheless taken over by Szymon Kuśmider. Jacek Kopczyński was also given a chance to play the emotions of an internally shaky Maul (this actor voiced his voice in the first episode, while Paweł Ciołkosz dubbed in the series Zabraka).

A few words at the end

I’m glad to be able to see the end of the Clone Wars from a completely different perspective. I am also glad that the creators focused primarily on the interactions between the characters, thus emphasizing the core of George Lucas’s world. They also proved that Ahsoka became an important element in the history of the Republic and the Skywalker family.
