Despite the fact that the second part of Dune is six months behind schedule, director Denis Villeneuve reiterates his desire to turn Dune into a trilogy. Due to the writers’ and actors’ strike, the premiere of the second part is announced for March 15, 2024. Dune: Part Two , is intended to complete the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s original novel Dune , while the third film would adapt Messiah’s Dune , Herbert’s first novel, which many consider a necessary epilogue. It completes the story of Paul Atreides by showing the tragedy of his plot. Along with Bene Gesserit meddling, this tragedy is one of the things Villeneuve values most about Warner Bros. Dune .released a trailer for the second part of the film, which you can see below.
If I can make a trilogy, it will be a dream come true. Dune Messiah was written in response to people seeing Paul Atreides as a hero. And that wasn’t the intention. My adaptation is closer to his idea that it is actually a warning.
– said Villeneuve in an interview with Empire
Villeneuve confirms that the adaptation of Dune Messiah will end his commitment to adapting The Chronicles of Dune , preventing the broader science-fiction eccentricities starting to emerge in later novels.
Then the books get more… esoteric
says Villeneuve.
What will Dune: Part Three be about ?
Part three would be an adaptation of Messiah’s Dune, a sequel to Herbert’s Dune first published in 1969. Given how closely Dune Messiah connects with Dune , it is impossible to summarize the plot without spoiling the events that will occur in Part Two . Consider this warning.
Dune Messiah begins 12 years after the end of Dune , with Paul ruling the galaxy as its new emperor. The book details Paul’s mistakes that ultimately lead to his downfall and exile. Highlighting Herbert’s subtext that leaders born of the traditional “Hero’s Journey” are probably unfit to rule, which many readers have missed or misunderstood. Paul’s story ends here, and the sequel to Dune Messiah , Children of Dune , focuses on his remaining family.
