Plans for a sequel were made as early as 2016. David Ayer, who did a great job of doing his job, was to direct again. However, he resigned due to other commitments. Many different creators were taken into account, incl. Mel Gibson. After many changes and turmoil, the job was offered to the proven James Gunn. As The Suicide Squad has its origins in comics from the 1980s, this is where the new ‘manager’ took inspiration. Therefore, in addition to a few heroes from the first part, he decided to introduce new characters.
The psychiatrist / criminal Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), George “Digger” Harkness (Jai Courtney) and the rest of the team were joined, among others, by Idris Elba, John Cena, Peter Capaldi, Alice Braga. The fans wondered who was who and what was it all about. Some man-shark, man-weasel… what is this? Relax, the pilot is flying with us. Gunn says this movie will be unlike anything you’ve seen before. I wonder what he also keeps in his barrel …
Gunn appreciates Ayer’s directorial work in the first part. He says he did a great job on the set and in selecting actors. We have to admit – Margot Robbie is great as a crazy criminal and is remembered by the viewer after leaving the cinema. It is a pity that the Joker was abandoned, it also added color to the film …
The production is full of appreciation for the achievements of Gunn ( Guardians of the Galaxy) so much that it gave him a free hand to lead the characters. The director revealed that:
(…) But in The Suicide Squad, some characters are good after all and some are terrible. Not only do they get involved in fights and say they are going to kill each other, they actually get involved in fights and kill each other. You really don’t know who will live and who will die. DC has given me the freedom to kill anyone – and I mean anyone. “
