The 2019 horror hit Brightburn: Son of Darkness may get a sequel after all. On Tuesday, a report revealed that The H Collective , which produced Brightburn , will be launching a new company called H3 Entertainment. The company reportedly plans to leverage new technologies like the Metaverse, Web3, and artificial intelligence in its upcoming projects, with the Brightburn sequel being one of the biggest examples. While this doesn’t necessarily provide an update on the production schedule for the Brightburn sequel , it at least lets fans know it’s in the works.
Brightburn was directed by David Yarovesky and written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, the brother and cousin of current DC Studios co-head James Gunn, who is one of the film’s producers. Evil Superman starred Elizabeth Banks and David Benman as a Kansas couple who take in Brandon Breyer/Brightburn (Jackson A. Dunn), a young boy from an alien planet who ends up using his powers to spread evil.
What would the sequel to Brightburn be about ?
Brightburn’s post-credits scene finally tied the film into the larger “evil Justice League,” arguably laying the groundwork for an entire cinematic universe. In the scene, talk show host The Big T (Michael Rooker) announced that there was a “half-man, half-sea creature” in the ocean, as well as a powerful witch who strangled her victims with rope, referencing DC’s Aquaman and Wonder Woman. There was even a reference to Frank Darbo/The Crimson Bolt (Rainn Wilson) from the 2010 film Gunna Super .
If we were to expand the Brightburn universe in other parts and in other ways, we would probably do it exactly the same way. In complete secrecy, and then at some point we would release a movie trailer that teaches what this new direction could be.”

Would James Gunn be involved in Brightburn 2 ?
As H3 Entertainment’s announcement reveals, the rights to Brightburn are jointly owned by both Gunn and H Collective – which is an interesting detail considering Gunn’s new job at DC Studios. Gunn is also writing and directing the DC reboot Superman: Legacy , which is scheduled for release in summer 2025. As Gunn already confirmed on social media in 2019, his work on franchises like DC Universe and Guardians of the Galaxy may get in the way of him directing a sequel to Brightburn himself .
It has to be someone who has all the humanity that Superman has, but is also an alien. It has to be someone who has the kindness and compassion that Superman has. And it has to be someone you want to hug
Gunn said of his search for a Superman actor before David Corenswet was cast in the role earlier this summer.
