The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power wasn’t the only attempt by Amazon Prime Video to explore Middle-earth. In an interview with Total Film, one of the showrunners of the Rings of Power , JD Payne, confessed that Amazon had previously dropped the show project about young Aragorn.
In an interview with Total Film , Payne told how the idea for a separate production about the young Aragorn was born:
Amazon bought the rights to the trilogy, add-ons and The Hobbit. They said there was a lot to show off – we can tell any story from the source material. So people started to focus on the show about young Aragorn, the spinoff on Gimli or other similar things.
What Payne said clearly suggests that Amazon may be producing many more works related to the work of JRR Tolkien. For now, however, we expect the Rings of Power , which the showrunner also mentioned in his speech:
We wanted to do something worthy of Tolkien. As we thought about it, we drew inspiration from the source material and saw all these different stories – this story from the Second Age, Sauron, the Fall of Númenor, and the fight against Sauron at Mount Doom. This culmination of major events in the Second Age seemed such an extraordinary and yet untold story.
Aragorn’s youth is certainly an intriguing subject, but his creation would most likely not be the same as what we saw in the Peter Jackson trilogy. Viggo Mortensen’s performance as this Dunedain is unique.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power from Amazon Prime Video will debut in a month, on September 2. You can watch the official trailer below:
