, Staffordshire , during Tolkien’s convalescence after the Battle of the Somme .
In his memoirs, he wrote that the Fall of Gondolin was “the first true story”
of Middle-earth. It was here that orcs, dragons, and Balrog first appeared. The edition includes various versions of the text, as well as a study providing context and references to other works by Tolkien. The manuscript of the novel was found in the archive left by the writer.
The text was edited and developed by the author’s 90-year-old son, Christopher, who announced that it would be his father’s last published work .
